Changing contact/instinctive call?

Postby Grey_Moon » Sat Feb 23, 2013 3:34 pm

Jacko and I are going to need to move in July because the lease of the lady we rent a room from is up.

I'm not *too* worried about her, given that I know how to manage/reduce a lot of her calls and reduce the frequency/volume of the noise she does make plus get rid of undesirable sound.
So birdie bootcamp is till July to make sure she's behaving well and ready.

With a little tweaking she's absolutely apartment friendly as she's quieter than a lot of the small parrots in the frequency of her noise making.

The one BIG problem that I don't know how to fix is her instinctive contact/excitement call.
Its a really harsh electronic screech and whoop.

It literally goes BOOOOOOP!...EEEEK!

Its not a call for attention, or a sound thats as a result of her being unhappy (lights are still on, late going to bed...etc) both of which I can either modify or get rid of.

Whether I answer the call or not she seems to make it.
If someone or something thumps/bangs in the house she makes it.
If someone opens the door/leaves she makes it. Whether we respond or do nothing she does it 1-3 times and then is quiet.

I'm worried about us getting thrown out because of noise.

Any suggestions? I'm a bit puzzled at how to deal with it.

I don't know the solution but how often does she do it? is it just once at a time or does she do it over and over again?

Maybe if you speak to your neighbours, if they seem approachable that is, when you move in and explain you have a rescue bird (you dont need to say how long you had her, just play on it a bit) who is sometimes noisy but you are working on methods through trial and error to quieten her further then that might buy you a bit of extra time to think of a solution.

I dont know how to go about changing this either, since it seems it isnt her regular contact call. The contact call is rather easily changed, though it takes a lot of work and time, but since that isnt your problem I dont know...

Are you sure that its a problem though?
I live in an appartment, and have moved once since I got Stitch, and after that we got Leroy.

In niether place has it been an issue, in our last place the neighbours didnt even know we had a bird, and that place had rather thin walls (this might be because they were a family with small kids but nontheless ^^). I do understand your worry though, I worry myself sometimes when they throw a fit and scream, but its very seldomly, and thus I dont think it should be a problem. Of course, if its a constant thing that goes on day in and day out, I can understand that it might be different.

If I was my neighbours I don't think it'd bother me too much given that it doesn't happen more than 1-2 times daily and each episode maybe is three calls at most.

She certainly doesn't do it for minutes to hours on end on a regular basis.
Hopefully the place won't have thin walls or crotchety people who get upset if the neighbour sneezes and they hear it

I'm sure i'll manage to figure something out but saying 'she's a rescue' might buy us some time/sympathy as much as I hate resorting to things like that.

I really hope you find somewhere great for you and Jacko :).

From the sounds of it, I wouldnt think it would be a problem with Jacko's screams!
Also, I think much will depend on how you put forward that you have a parrot, if you talk about screaming then the landlord might be apprehensive, but if you just mention it in passing and how cute she is etc, then I would think they wouldnt pay as much mind, but I might be wrong?

From what you just said I really think your over worrying.

I get what your saying about trying to get the sympathy vote though. I would only use that if I had to.
