Noisy Birds - How To Keep These Guys More Quiet?

Postby Scotty » Sun Mar 03, 2013 5:17 pm

Hi Guys!

For any species of bird(s) that tends to be noisy, is there any good methods to discipline them to get them to be quieter?

For now I'm concerned with Jenday Conures which I'm watching one for someone that is really noisy, you can hardly step out of the room for 5mins. without this guy going off... :(

THANKS

There are ways but it takes time, longer than what your sitting for. Only thing you can really do is keep him busy but I'm afraid most jendays are noisy by nature.

Oh well actually it's not just for sitting, I'll also be training him for this as well, so however long it takes...

So for the long haul?

Personally I've just been giving him short time outs or walking out of the room and not paying attention until he understands that being quiet gets him what he wants...

I'm a bit confused here....

You're 'pet sitting' the bird, and during that time the person who owns them is expecting you to train them as well? If that is the case, I just feel the need to let you know that the birds are going to respect you, and not him. You're going to be the one that trains them and the one that they respond to the best. I'm not saying all of your training will be useless when they return home to their owner, but he will definitely have to re-establish some things and create the same bond that you have with them.

Birds, especially conures, are noisy. You can train them to be quieter and ignore them when they're noisy to prevent them from being loud for attention, but that takes a long time to do and requires a pretty developed bond. And even then, they will still be loud for other reasons that you simply can't control. A bird playing with a toy is going to be loud, a bird happy and singing and going is going be loud, a bird with a mate is going to be loud. That is just something you need to consider when purchasing a parrot.

I just need to add that one noisy matter, if he is screaming for your attention when you leave the room, if the bird isn't needed to be cagebound all day some of this screaming may be greatly reduced by allowing it flight, since then it doesnt have to scream for you to come to him but can simply fly to the person he is calling. only time mines ever are noisy (part from what I would consider pretty natural unavoidable noises) is if their locked into their cages and wants to come to me, then they start making sounds that will get me to go to their cages. my brownheaded starts repeating "hello" and after a while if I do not respond to this he will start doing a phone signal in case I was too far away to hear his gentle hellos, the hellos wouldnt be considered noisy by anyone but the ringing phone can be heard across the street. But if I were to clip my birds they would most likely constantly be making sounds in order to get my attention even if outside their cages since they wouldnt have been able to fly to me themselves. other than that it is a game of rewarding sounds that you can tolerate while ignoring sounds you can't. and ignoring simply means what it sais no reaction at all, no timeouts, no spraying water no nothing... while the sounds you can stand needs to be praised and constantly answered. this will eventually change his calls for attention into thouse calls your responding too. but birds will still be noisy.

I re-edited the post, sorry it's not just about sitting or when I'm sitting, but training really..

Yes I do understand a bit about differnt birds, but I've already target trained the bird and also to do some tricks that he now does with the owner as well...

He's also not very social and aggresive so it's good to have a stranger train and socialize the bird to make him realize these strangers give him good treats for doing things...

Thanks polan I pretty much understand all this already...

For now I leave the room and don't return until he's quiet making him realize he doesn't get what he wants until quiet, it's working but it's been slow going, he's stubborn...

Thanks guys

It may actually speed things up by responding to a chirp or something, a sound that isn't unpleasant and make that sounds its contact call rather than being quiet, the reasoning I have behind this is that neither you or the owner can possibly respond to the bird anytime it's quiet, it will be when napping etcetera as well wich means your going to disturb the bird if your trying to respond to as much quiet as possible. And it also seems quite unnatural for a bird to replace a contact call with complete silence, even if the most natural is having them loud contact calls I imagine it being easie to replace it with another vocal call, still having the same function as the normal loud one. This is only possible though if the bird ever does any tolerable noises. Like my brownheaded has gotten plenty of attention through speaking wich means he will start saying hey or hello whenever he is caged and wants to interact.

This guy just loves to scream is all, because it seems like the owner has spoiled him with attention really bad not understanding how to raise a bird.

There's nothing tolerable about any of it, he's unfortunately a screaming little brat. He also doesn't like to listen and do what he's told and throws his own weight around and act aggressive towards you.

I've been working with him and slowly it's been working out better, but wow this guy is a handful...
