Training more then one bird

Postby AuraKiwi&Jala » Thu Mar 07, 2013 12:35 am

I ve had my 3 GCC siblings for a while now and I love them so much
I was wondering if anyone has adopted more then 1 bird at once and how they ve gone about training. I m finding it difficult finding enough time to be with them individually. Being apart also causes them to be stressed and I don t like seeing them like . Is it possible to touch train together? Also if I do separate them, I'm pretty sure the other two can hear the clicker...help
Thank you! :gcc: :gcc: :gcc:

You'll want to separate them for the initial teaching of what the clicker means, I think. They'll get over the separation if you use super yummy things like sunflower seeds that they don't get otherwise. If you put as many closed doors as possible between the training and non-training birds, the sound will be muffled and those left in the cage won't think it's relevant to them.

Once you've taught them the clicker, you could use the following technique. This video isn't about parrots, but I think, as it's still clicker training, you will find it very informative and useful!

You won't need to seperate them just train them individually I'm training 3 birds at once and I've got no problems. When your birds are in their cage they'll probably think nothing of the click sound

I do think it will be easier to train them (at least to begin with) if you seperate them but I would ease them in to it if they are getting stressed, it will also help in other circumstances like you have to take one to the vets if they learn that sometimes they are not always together.
Take one away from the others for a few seconds, then take him/her back, take another one, then the third. Keep them in eye shot to start with, gradually build up the time, take them into another room for a few secs, again build up the time.

I don't actually know how well this will work as I've never had your problem, I've always kept mine caged seperately and didn't used to focus too much on training.

Thank you, I was worried they would get confused if the "non training birds " could hear the clicker.
I will start today.
How would you ( multi bird parents) go about potty traing your lot? One bird at a time?

When training multiple birds they learn that the clicker only has meaning if combined with your attention at the moment they hear the click. :-)

Yeah, this is interesting! I am trying to train 3 different (various sized) birds at once as well. And I find it quite difficult. As I train one of them, another one would fly by (I train in the kitchen-dining room-living room area) and distract him, etc....
I am just starting training really.... 1 of my birds learned about the clicker really fast and is eager every time I take it out... the other 2 don't understand it quite yet... they are interested by what is going on (they see treats!!! yummyyyy!!!) but they are either scared or ignoring the clicker :?

So Ive been considering to do one session of 10 minutes per bird per day in an enclosed room (my bedroom) with one perch and me and thats it.... no other things flying by and squawking...
Is that the right way ?
