Not Interested in Touch Training!!!

Postby Cockatielsongs » Mon Mar 11, 2013 12:41 am

I've been making some progress with my baby Galah! Well this morning I heard him screaming, I ran to see what was the matter and turns out his foot was tangled to a bit of thread stuck to his perch. Panicking because he was trying to flap and twist his foot away, terrified he would break his foot or something I reached in and tried to untangle his foot, meanwhile Bandit had bit my finger really hard and wasnt letting go but while he was biting me he stopped moving, while my other hand untangled his foot, it was painful because it took a minute to untangle his foot safely, a minute of him sinking his beak into me, I let him bite me because he seemed more "relaxed" biting me. He let go when I was done, I left to so he could calm down. Later on I began to do one last session of getting familiar with the clicker I noticed that he was actually responding better then ever before! He seemed eager to interact with me but still wont let me touch him. Anyways I moved onto touch training but he didnt want anything to do with the stick. He didnt get tense or anything he just showed no interest. I let him take a break and a while later I tried again with a different stick. Still no response. What do I do? I planned on using touch training prior to stepping up...

I guess you're talking about target training here? How old is your galah? He may be too young to be training as yet but in any case keep the sessions very short, just a couple of minutes. Start by touching the target stick to his beak & reward him. Do that a few times & he should start paying attention to the stick. You need a good treat though, something he really likes, and better to do it when he's not just eaten & is full

ps I just read your previous thread.....so your bird is really only a baby. It's not clear from your post whether he's taking treats from you? If not I would suggest you slow down & work on getting your bird comfortable with taking a treat from your hand. Spend some time just sitting with it every day, talk to it gently, put your hand as close as you can without the bird looking uncomfortable & just rest it there quietly. Offer a treat from a small distance & wait for the bird to show interest.
I'm not sure what you mean by touching him either but I would take more time to get comfortable with the taking treat from hand scenario & work on the target training to teach him to step up.
Michael's thread that someone else gave you is good - follow that.
Hope that helps, good luck!

Hi! Thanks for replying! My Galah does take treats from my hand! I'll definately keep my sessions nice short :) i'll try touching the stick to his beak and rewarding and see if he'll begin to notice it. Thanks again!
