Interesting biting behaviour in petstore Jenday's

Postby CSLFiero » Tue Mar 12, 2013 10:17 am

Me and the misses went over to the Petland Batavia to spend a little time around some larger birds and got to playing with a couple of Jenday's. They were labeled as hand fed babies and they were displaying plenty of baby behaviour.

The nice one immediately wanted to be on my shoulder and was very resistant to leave. She gave me a couple good squwaks right in the ear to boot, ouch! it's still popping a little.. :? That didn't seem too out of the ordinary though..

The other, after seeing it's penmate lifted out, looked very eager to come out himself. I noticed that in the pen he had quite a lot of trouble perching. He'd be all spread out, awkwardly balance, flapping away. Moving from perch to perch was a consistent problem. He took immediately to stepping up on the hand and my wife lifted him out. He seemed okay for a minute but then, without drama or any urgency, preceeded to bite the living crap out of my wife's finger tips! She's a pro and didn't freak out, just pinched his beak off her finger. He didn't seem too angered by this at all, he just calmly let go.. But then within a second went right back down for another bite! same spot, digging in good and drawing blood. Again, my wife, a real pro, picked his beak out. And just like before, no drama or anger, but more biting, this tim against her thumb nail.

My wife got frustrated and clearly she was in pain and growing nervous now, too nervous to keep handling because, let me tell you, it had to have really hurt her cause she was scared touch the other one. She lowered it back into the pen and set it on a perch, which it flapped about a moment to balance on.

So forum, what do you think the deal is? confidence? balance? wife's fingers look like food? hates the hand? I wondered if it just got tossed back into the pen too much, but it sure seemed eager to step up, so I don't think there is hatred/fear of the hand..

I don't really have advice but I wanted to compliment your wife. She certainly sounds like she handled herself really well! I am absolutely the worst at dealing with bites.

couldn't be more proud of her! I truthfully sort of expected the other jenday was a biter, and I told her as much.. but I asked if she'd try anyways knowing that she was mild mannered about it. I've seen a CAG go at her and she didn't even let off the baby-talk when she told it to let go of her.

I always let her get the owwies first since I'm kind antsy.

Most parrots are nasty little buggers, don't come with an instruction manual or warranty, and it's all on you to make a relationship that works. They're not easy pets by any means.
