GCC wont come out of her cage after new birds came home

Postby ChicagoPete » Thu Mar 14, 2013 1:58 pm

I adopted a 7 month old female Green Cheek Conure about a month ago. She would always like to come out of her cage, she is hand tamed. She likes to fly around to each room or her play station or land on me. I could put my hand in her cage and she would step up. We seemed to be bonding right of the bat.

Last Friday I adopted a pair of Bourkes Parakeets. I brought them home and put their closed cage next to my Conure's cage. Reina, my Conure always has her cage open when Im home until its time for bed. The first day she spent a lot of time sitting on the Bourkes (Fred and Wilma) cage. She would fly to her playground that is in the living room and hang out for a while but would keep going back to keep an eye on Fred & Wilma.

On day 3 she stopped wanting to come out of her cage, she hides in her little happy hut when she sees me coming and sticks her beak out to look at me. I can tell she obviously doesnt want to come out so I figure okay lets wait till I get home from work. When I get home from work its the same thing. I leave her cage door open like always but she stays in all evening. Each time I go into her room she is hides.

She is still eating, drinking and bathing and she isnt acting aggressive. Maybe I need to move the Bourkes to a different room or put them up for adoption? I havent even let the Bourkes out of the cage yet because they havent been with me a week yet. Im not sure what to do, any help would be great. Thank you

Just a quick note, please quarantine your new parrots for at least six weeks!

I talked with the Breeder and she said the Bourkes have been medicated and dewormed. They should be fine. She said the Conure is jealous and if I keep the Bourkes in a room where the Conure cant see the Bourkes she should go back to being how she was. Any advice would be great. Thanks

first i wouldn't take the breeder's word. they should be in seperate rooms. your :gcc: will come around. when the quarentine is over introduce them in a neutral room where nothing belongs to any birds. parrots are very territorial when it comes to anything they believe belongs to them so it's better to have them meet away from their things cages ,food, and toys.

Urgh, well its a bit late for quarantine now but for future reference always always quarantine new birds.
I'm sure your green cheek will come round but keep your new birds away, gcc can be pretty agressive and bullyish- even to birds bigger than themselves.
In the meantime I would take you GCC and the bourkes for a vet check to be on the safe side, they are pretty curious and brave birds and will usually do anything for a bit of attention, of course there are a few shyer ones but this sort of behaviour isn't characteristic for the species.

I disagree that's it's too late. If the new parrots are disease bearing and the green cheek hasn't been infected yet then continuing to expose the parrots to each is not a good option. It's increasing the chance of exposure and that's a gamble.

There are a variety of different diseases many of which would not be covered by being dewormed (is this a thing for parrots?) and preemptively medicated. Sounds suspect honestly. Also makes me think of chicken farmers who give antibiotics to their chickens because their immune system is so poor but that aside it is not too late.

Ok fair point but after a week the chances are the GCC would already have picked up anything they would have but your right, anything that reduces the risk is the right thing to do.
As for worming parrots I don't agree with it unless needed, wormers were designed as a treatment not a preventative.

Think you for all the quarantine advice. The good news is I put the Bourkes in another room when I got home last night from work. Ran to the video store and came back but my Conure still would not come out all evening. This morning she actually stepped up and is out of her cage.

If someone put a couple of aliens in your home you'd be a bit scared of coming out if you didn't know who they were and were making strange noises and you didn't know where they came from. Make sure to spend lots of time with both birds (obviously observing correct quarantine procedure). Your GCC will come to get over it in time I'm sure :-)
