How you g is too young to start training

Postby Reeny » Tue Mar 19, 2013 1:11 pm

I recently brought home a baby senegal parrot. I am in the process of weaning him and he is eating very well. We are working on stepping up and I have been using the clicker with the behavior. Not sure if he is too young. He will take food from my hand but it is still too new. I would love to eventually clicker train him. When is a good time to start. Like said we are working on stepping up. Once I get him in a cage I thought we could start working on targeting. Was wondering how young is too young to start. I only am working on stepping up a few times a day.

I'd say less than 5-9 months is too young for formal training a Senegal Parrot. This doesn't mean the bird shouldn't be learning. Just not in a regimented clicker, treat kind of way. At this age they learn just cause they are a baby and that's what babies do. So you don't have to focus on the target, clicker, treat systems and save those for later. Instead, expose the bird to as many people, places, foods, toys, and things possible. Handle it a lot, play with it a lot, have other people handle it, etc.
