Stepping up problem

Postby Cockatielsongs » Mon Mar 25, 2013 1:21 am

Hey everyone!
Now I'm target training my bird onto my hand, he goes on my hand sometimes but other times he just walks around my hand to the stick. He doesn't bite me, he goes on my hand sometimes without a problem but otherwise he just walks around to get the stick. What do I do? :) :galah:

I don't really like to nudge/push his stomach so he steps on because I feel like I'm forcing him onto my hand without giving him a choice. I don't really like the idea of commanding him around, I want him to know that he does have a choice that way he will co operate with me better knowing I respect his wishes.... :?

Sounds like he's not motivated enough. Are you training him when he's a bit hungry? And does he really want the treat you're offering? You need to find a treat or treats that he's crazy about and train him first thing in the morning before he's been fed, then take his food out of his cage before you train him in the afternoon/evening. Start with an hour or two and see if he's more motivated.

And you're right, you can't command or force him, he's got to want to do it (to get the treat at first).

Sounds like you're making great progress, now you just need to tweak it a bit!

That must be it, I found out my sister fed him about half an hour before I started the training session so he mustn't of been that hungry. I'll try again a little later or so. Thanks for the reply! :D

Not sure where your training your bird but sometimes they will take the other route, especially if they percieve it to be easier or I think sometimes they do it just to be defiant :P.

When I had to retrain Ollie to step up because he got scared of me he frequently tried to avoid stepping up by walking round even though he knew what I wanted him to do, he was just scared I was going to give him more meds.
I found practicing moving targets very helpful (but if your bird isn't used to following a target that moves you need to practice it first), basicly if he walked around my hand to touch the stick I would move it back to the other side of my hand before he could touch it to get his treat so he would walk back round. Eventually he realised it was easier just to jump on my hand than repeatedly walk round and round but he still had a choice.

Another way is to move your training location, for instance to a perch which makes it impossible for the bird to walk round, it will either step up or it wont in order to reach the stick. The risk here is if it decides it doesn't want to step up in order to reach the target your also lowering your successful command rate which may teach the bird more that is doesn't have to respond (it doesn't of course but no need to encourage that idea) for that reason I would go with the moving target idea if the bird will still successfully target most of the time.

Hi there,
I'll definitely be trying this! My :galah: is 100% target trained :D Unfortunately he came to me already clipped, nothing I could of done about it... anways when he is walking about on the floor and I call out "Target!" I swear he comes running! :D It looks so cute because he's almost tripping over his feet to get to the stick
Anyways thanks for the replies!
