Grabbing and lifting??

Postby Cockatielsongs » Mon Mar 25, 2013 8:25 am

Hi everyone!
I want to do the whole grabbing and lifting thing with my bird so he gets comfortable with him being touched anywhere etc Im not quite sure where to start. I heard with larger birds you do it from the neck so you dont get bitten, how do you do this I mean wouldnt it hurt the bird? :?

Btw I mean grabbing by you know how in Michaels videos you can see Kili and Truman have no problem in being grabbed and lifted.

I really want to be able to do this because I would really prefer my Galah not to be handled with a towel on vet trips

Cheers

Michaels guides are really good for teaching you to do any form of tactile training including grabbing. However I do feel the need to tell you to slow down, theres no rush, it was only a day or so ago you posted about step up training (same bird?). Unless your bird it 100% with step up and other forms of touch training do not attempt grabbing at this point.
Slow and steady is far better than risking getting it wrong/losing trust and having to start over. It is important though so do it soon but you need to lay down the groundwork for it first.

I don't really plan on doing the grabbing stuff right now, I'm still focusing on stepping up in our training sessions. I just wanted to know how to do this in advance so when I do get up to that Im ready to go. Thanks very much or your concern :D

Glad to hear it :) I just know a few who get over enthusiastic about the whole training thing. I'm the same though and like to know things well in advance.
