POOP

Postby Awycherley » Thu Apr 18, 2013 5:15 am

Whenever i take my conure out of his cage he will soon enough poo on my bed or my carpet. I have layed down newspaper under my cage and put him straight back in the cage whenever he does poo, however, he still insists on taking his business where it is unwanted. Will this take time or is there other tricks in the book?

Thank-yoh :gcc:

Sound like your bird is the perfect candidate for potty training!

This is how we did it for our green cheek...

Have the bird wait in it's cage and keep saying "Go Potty."

When the bird finally poops, make it sound like the BEST THING HE'S EVER DONE IN HIS WHOLE ENTIRE LIFE! Give it a treat and pick up the bird.

Return the bird to the cage 15 mins later and start the whole process again. The bird will pick it up quickly.

And in the mean time, watch your bird's body language. If he starts to put his tail up and walks backwards...quickly pick him up, put him in his cage and say, "Go potty."

Good luck! :)

I would suggest you're going at it back to front. It's a pointless exercise 'punishing' your bird (by putting him back in his cage) for doing the most natural thing in the world (pooing). You need to reward him (by making a big fuss of him) when he does go where you want him to. Time how often he goes, roughly, then put him on a perch or somewhere you want him to go in a little less than that time span and then fuss him when he goes. And be prepared to just clean it up when he has an accident which, like with a baby or a puppy, will happen.

I can tell when my bird is about to poop so I just hold a paper towel underneath them then they do it. Occasionally they'll do it somewhere annoying but its not like it smells and it's easily cleaned up with a wet wipe... It doesn't really bother me that much if I miss it :p

If he does it soon as he comes out, then hold him over the paper towel till he does it then continue playing. Just watch for signs that he's about to do it and then place him on the out of cage perch or just pop the kitchen towel underneath :-)

They will but at least its damage control. I'm not a fan of it but if it works for you then that's great :-)

I have a question as well about this topic. My senegal parrot has pooped in his food twice today. For some reason it seems like he doesn't want to go on his perch. Is there anyway I can change this behavior?

help

Postby joeynrichu » Wed Jul 03, 2013 5:58 am

Hi...
My name is Raeez and i am from India. I have a lil companion, a sun conure, my first bird, i call him Joey :sun: .. well i never actually potty trained him. He is almost three months old now. Before he learned to fly i used to keep him down evry 15 minutes or so. He used to poop then, so that he could come back running to me after he is done. Now he has started to fly around, i was thinking of clipping his wings when i came across the post in here mentioning the various stress levels and health issues faced by clipped birds. Thank God i didnt do that to my Joey. Well coming back to the point, as he is a flighted bird (still a baby though :danicing: ) ... :D . Now when i put him down or back in the cage for potty, he immediately flys back to my shoulder and wouldnt go back. So its tough getting him to stay on the ground or the cage. If at all , I will have to lock the cage until he goes, and takes him back after that. So even if i get a perch later on i think he will still be comfortable on my shoulder. He doesnt like to be taken off from my shoulder at all. Suggestions pls
