Ok, I'm new to birds and have owned our now 8 month old eclectus boy for 2 months. He will not step up from inside his cage. I have to put my hand behind him to eventually have him step up (which I HATE doing...but I end up doing it so that he can get some play time outside the cage and spend time with us). He has never bitten us nor tried, eats well, drinks, chit chats a little now and then and seems to want our attention. If I have him on me and give him scratches he comes close to falling asleep sometimes. He seems to like playing on his java tree and has even enjoyed some meals at the table with us. He will step up from anywhere BUT his cage. I don't want to keep forcing him and have him hold it against me! What can I do, he will under no circumstances take treats from my hand so that doesn't work at all with him. I haven't target trained, but I'm wondering how to effectively do that when he doesn't take treats! Any advice/help would be appreciated, I've tried all kinds of different things and nothing seems to be working. He's a friendly bird and I don't want him to be cooped up all day in his cage...
Thanks in advance for your help.
