New baby Hahns macaw biting

Postby Salmando9 » Wed Jun 05, 2013 11:57 pm

Hi guys,
just today I got my 4 months old hahns macaw that i bought him and had him shipped to me. before I bought i had a skype video call with the store and they were holding the bird, petting him and everything looked good. When he came today, while i was opening the carrier he was trying to bite through the door, then i opened it and was trying to get him in his cage, he lunged in to bite my fingers, i thought i would let him and see what happens, he actually bit very hard and it started bleeding. anyways i got him on a perch finally as he kept running away from the perch and doesnt know what step up is. i got him in his cage. he started eating and ate very well. I left him alone.

my question is, what should i do? should i go ahead and do what the article that Micheal wrote says "How to tame & train parrot" or is there another option?

thank you and sorry for the long post.

All birds bite - it's just how they communicate, what they do when they're afraid or angry, and some just bite for fun. Your baby was just taken from his home and the people he knew, put in a travel carrier, shuttled around for hours, and introduced to a new person he's never seen before. Of course he's gonna bite! ;) He's scared!

I would give him some time to get acclimated to you and his new home, and then slowly start trying to interact with him. Talk to him, offer him treats from your hands, and let him see you and get accustomed to your presence. If he seems scared or uncomfortable in any way, back off and try again later. Michael's article and many others on the internet do a great job of explaining how you should approach a new bird, so I won't go into too much detail.

I do want to add however that what I think is the most important thing to remember is to try and be patient when he bites. (It's hard, I know. I've gone through it and my birds have much smaller beaks than a Hahns!) Obviously, that means don't hurt or threaten him for biting, but also - don't give up on him and keep spending time and interacting with him despite the bites. If you start neglecting him because you're scared of his beak, he may never become tame. But if you keep at it, it will get better, I swear, and when it does you will have the sweetest little bird! From what you said about skyping with the previous owners, he probably is already very social and tame and is only biting because he's in a new place and scared. You may not have to put in much effort other than spending time with him. Good luck and congrats on your baby!

The bird must have been terrified after having been shipped like a package! Birds are prey animals and have a very highly developed fear response and biting is all they have for self protection. I suggest you leave the bird in his cage for a few days to settle down, just sit with him, not looking at him all the time but reading or something, then talking to him. Watch his body language and when he seems comfortable with you sitting there then start offering him a treat through the bars. When he'll take that from you, you can start following Michael's taming guide.

I think i did a very good progress but i think i ruined it at the end. I was able to get the bird to calm down. And then slowly started giving him food from my hands. And surprisingly he was very cooperative. I made him go through so much but he still fought and came to the treat. And then i slowly opened the cage door and was able to put my hands in and give him to treat. Then slowly took him out to his stand perch. And to make it short i was able to get him to step on a perch that im holing to get the treat. As i saw he was getting full and distracted. I filled his bowls with food so he can go back and have a good meal. But i think and im pretty sure i ruined it all, while he was on my hand perch trying to go in. He tripped and started to almost fall and was flapping his wings. Then he lunged to his bowl. :(

What do you guys think? Did i ruin it?
Even though, I'm happy with the progress and to see how eager he was.

Theres one thing. Every time he steps on the hand perch that im holding. He gets his treat, but the he runs fast to the other side of the perch (where my hand and the clicker are) and trying to touch with his beak the clicker, i havent waited enough to see if he'll bite my hand or not.

What do you guys think? Help please!
