Cage behavior!! Need help

Postby Korlipoo » Thu Jun 20, 2013 8:41 am

My four month old :senegal: has no problem when I pick him up and let him out of his cage but lately when it's time for me to put him back in his cage he doesn't want to go in. He will nibble on my finger or start walking up my arm. Is there something I'm doing wrong? What's causing this behavior?

He's probably started to associate the cage as something bad or boring, and you have unknowingly reinforced this behaviour causing him to not want to go into it.

Its possible to work around though with positive reinforcement, and you can get some ideas here at Michael's blog:

Read the above article!

I use a treat when they go in, in addition to food, and making the cage a fun place to be.

My :galah: used to be like this too, so I stopped making him have meals out of his cage. If he wanted dinner he went back to his cage. Make sure you arent putting him in his cage as any sort of punishment whether it was for biting or whatever, put his favorite toys in the cage. Associate the cage with good things

Target training has worked wonders for me. I never had any problem putting Alfie back in his cage until things started unravelling following his illness. Then I started target training for serious - I'd not used it much before as he would always step up without any problem - and it's been great. I target him off my shoulder when I don't want him up there (if he starts getting nippy I don't want him by my face but if I put my hand up to him he'd nip my fingers but the targeting completely resolved that problem) and now I target him into his cage and it works a treat. What the others said is all good too. Don't feed him outside the cage, and give him a specially nice treat every time he goes in.
