Rebecca is 100% correct. You can try and you can cajole but, if the bird doesn't want it, don't insist. It's a matter of respect - and, although it sounds funny using this word in relation to a bird, respect for its feelings inspires trust, which is the foundation of a good relationship with any bird.

I agree with this for the most part, but could not conceive of how anyone could interact with any animal without showing it the respect due to it. I am not speaking of the fear based useage of the word ( I am not afraid of it but I do respect it ), I am speaking of the respect that come with the appreciation of the animal itself and the beauty and variety that it brings to the world.

I agree with you 100%, Wolf, but there is a lot of people who don't respect their animals' wishes, especially with parrots. People who want what they want and don't care if they are stressing the poor animal out by insisting they do or accept something they don't want to. Just look at the 'old' advice people used to give to first time owners of parrots: tries to bite? clip him, doesn't want to come to you? take him out of the room he knows and put him in an unfamiliar room with low light so he has no choice but to submit to you; he's afraid of hands? towel him and force him to accept your touch; he screams? cover his cage/put him in a closet/basement and I could go on and on and on! Sheesh, breeders still split the mandible of males that become too aggressive during breeding season or sex the babies by endoscopy WITHOUT ANESTHESIA and that goes beyond disrespect to abuse and cruelty, if you ask me, but it's still been done!
