New Indian ringneck

Postby truvixxen » Fri Aug 09, 2013 9:28 pm

I was wondering if i can any opinion. I recently purchased an irn about a month ago. But I'm a little frustrated because I have done a lot of research in irn and know that they go thru a bluffing stage yet my bird has not been friendly since when I brought him home. He is VERY hand shy even afraid. Doesnt want me to touch him, gets nervous even when I talk to him. He was supposedly "hand raised" but his behavior and actions seem otherwise. I do not like giving up on an animal but I dont think this is bluffing because he hasn't been friendly from day one. But I also don't want to assume anything. I am asking because I might have the possibility of letting him become a breeder bird and getting another baby irn from someone else... Just trying to explore all optiobs first and maybe get some insights from any actual irn owners.

It took a few weeks for my irn to even accept me near his cage, 2 years on he steps up briefly and I can tickle him. He was meant to be hand reared but he definitely wasn't, I was scammed by a northern couple if you Google it you will find the scam

He will get better but if he's like mine it will take serious effort, I did it and I work 8hrs a day. It's very rewarding but he will never accept other people

What you're describing is normal for a parent raised bird. I think what you expecting was something like a hand reared and it doesn't work that way. It will take more than a month of training to alleviate this. You need to go through way more training before you get to any kind of petting or handling stage. Please read some of Michaels articles on how to get your bird out of the cage. This is where you should start.
