ringneck biting constantly

Postby gazjones » Sun Aug 11, 2013 10:15 am

Hi all.

My girlfriend and I got a 14 week old ring neck parakeet a couple of weeks ago and she won't stop biting.

She isn't scared of either of us, will fly and land on my fingers with the step up command and likes to play with her toys while sat on my lap.

Problem is, she bites every few seconds like its some kind of game. I have scars all over both my hands from ignoring her doing it. I have read plenty of guides on internet with how to deal with this, the scars show how patient I have been with her so far.

I sometimes use gloves when I handle her, she doesn't bite the glove as much, while sat on the glove she has a habit of going for my arm and will walk right down glove to bite me.

She often flys and lands on my head or shoulder, same thing she goes for bites on my neck.

I have tried a few different methods to stop her doing it. The earthquake method worked for a few days but now when I do it she just hangs on doesn't stop biting.

I honestly do not know what to try next. She's lovely normally and responds to commands and is quite happy to entertain herself.

I have owned 3 birds in the past, 2 budgies and a cockatiel, none of them were biters so I feel a bit out of my depth currently.

Any help appreciated!!!

"she bites every few seconds like its some kind of game"

That's because she isn't biting, she is playing and exploring and learning, just like a puppy does when it takes your hand in its mouth. just ignore her, she will get bored if nothing exciting happens though I can appreciate how annoying it is having gone through an extreme nippy phase with one of mine
