Found a Lovebird in yard

Postby Csies » Mon Sep 09, 2013 11:49 am

I found a lovebird in my backyard and it came to me and landed on my arm. Got a cage. It went right in on its own. Since then (two days) it will not let me touch it. Freaks out if I put my hand too close in the cage. Is eating food I bought at pet store. But won't eat any fresh fruit or treats. I have no idea how old or sex. Do you think it is just missing its owner or what? It seemed so friendly until it got caged. This is the first bird I've ever had. I keep reading how sociable these birds are but aside from the initial contact it seems unfriendly. Is it just sad and scared?

Are you trying to find it's owner? Check Craigslist, newspapers, call shelters, I am sure the owner is trying to find his pet.

I'd put up some posters, maybe in your local vet or pet shop. Try and find the owner, I'm sure they're worried. Maybe leave the bird alone for a bit, must have had quite a shock for it to find itself outside.

Well first of all, you should check email lists, veterinarian offices, craiglist etc for a missing lovebird. I'm sure the owner must be bummed out.

Yes, I told the local pet store, checked Craigslist, posted it on parrot911. No posters. It is more active now but still won't be handled or eat anything but seed and millet. Is it possible to get it to become more friendly or is this it now?

You could try and feed it from your hand, fill your hand with seed but don't look at the bird. Be calm and patient. But might be best not to get to attached to it, for whenever its owner finds it. I hope they do find it, if that was me I'd be freaking out hoping to find my bird.
