Newly acquired GC Conure, correcting behavior

Postby NHCardinal » Mon Sep 23, 2013 9:28 pm

I brought home a 10 month old, unflighted, male GCC last week and I've just been interacting with it throughout the week. Despite the bird stepping up and allowing him to be held, he did display alot of nippiness and was keen about not being placed back into the cage once out. This behavior has continued on with me.

I'm told GCC's can be nippy when young, but how young are we talking about?

I have Michael's book and I was following it diligently with my lovie, but I don't know where to start with this guy because he displays a mixture of results:

He was able to target on day 1, but I feel its due more to his curiosity than thru trained learning. 1/4 of the time he'll ignore me and explore the outside of his cage.

Half of the time, he can step up on my finger - although he was taught with negative reinforcement ie. not on command. I give him a pass with having to beak for stability, but when he does step up its usually preceded by excessive nipping.

The other 50% of attempted in-cage step-ups he'll quickly bypass my hand and hang on the door or head out the cage like nothing.

He can be held, but only close to chest and not alone in hand.

My family got a GCC as a weanling and I hope you are prepared for the "terrible twos" (my conure is currently around 4 years old). Don't get me wrong, I love my conure he can be such a sweetheart, but he was generally very nippy up until around last year. Remember they can live to between 20-25 years, so even my conure is still a toddler of sorts. Just be patient and try to use positive reinforcement when he steps up without nipping and he will eventually learn to not be as aggressive with his beak.
