Clicker conditioning two birds (Help and tips needed!)

Postby visualstarmedia » Sat Nov 16, 2013 12:54 am

Hi Everyone,

Im new to the forum and I am a new bird owner, i have a 7 year old Sun Conure who had a previous owner, and a 5 year old Cockatiel, with a previous owner as well (With playful kids who use to torture her a lot). I am beggining to train them, first by clicker conditioning them. Ive had them for two months and ive gained their trust, they are comfortable around me and on me. Now that I am trying to target train them and clicker conditioning, i started putting one outside the room while i trained the other in order that the clicker does not confuse one bird as it its meant for the others good actions. I fear that if the bird hears the clicker but doesnt get a treat, as it is meant for the other, it will become confuse and frustrate. Is this a good practice?

The other problem im having is, the cockatiel goes crazy and begins wining for a while if i take the sun conure out the room, she for some reason feel secure with him around, and freaks out without him, and Rio, the sun Conure, is an attention whore as it screams and wines uncontralaby when put in another room and ignored, so when i train lucy (cockatiel) i take RIo out, he begans to cream, lucy begins to wine, cannot concentrate, and is hard to train her. even having put RIO in the farthest room, his screams are loud enough to be heard by lucy, which sets her off to crying for him and looking for him. As a result, Rio is far more advanced in the training, being pretty good so far with touch training, while lucy has yet to been able to even be clicker conditioned. It has only been 3 days of consistent training for both. Any tips from multiple bird owners? if i should start separete, is there a point where i could have both in the same room and the clicker training wont throw the bird who isnt being trained off?

thanks in advance!

Yes, keep training them separated for now! Later, if they're not jealous or get distracted it might be possible to train them at the same time.

Can you keep them in the same room, but cover (or partially cover) the cage with the bird which isnt being trained? That might keep them calmer?
(and is also what I do)
