Senegal Parrots Biting

Postby LordAnakin » Wed Dec 11, 2013 8:41 am

Hello everyone,

my native language is german, so have some mercy with me if i cant express myself good enough ;)

Around May/June we bought 2 senegal Parrots. Both are NOT hand-breeded and we got them after they learned to eat without the support of their parents.
They are from different breeding mothers and also male and female.

After we put them in their cages we let them accustom themselfes to their new "homes"

I talked with them after they started tolarating me and feeded them with my hand pretty fast and also started with the clicker training.
After about 1-2 Month they learned to step up, fly towards my finger if I call them and are not afraid of flying on our heads and playing with our hair or anything like that.

Now to my problem:
After they fly on my finger and sit their, they do one of two things.
1. They start to bite my finger or my hand (not too hard but still hard enough to make a punctual wound)
2. They climb up to my shoulder and play with my hair / or bite my ear

I dont know what to do. Ignoring them is to painful and they also dont "dislike" me or my sister in comparison to our parent which they are not as fond of.

What should we do? My mother said we should seperate them for a few weeks (send 1 to my aunt) and train them this way.
I personally dislike the idea. I couldnt imagine myself living alone even if it is for a week without the contact to my friends and family and dont want my birds to do just that.

I hope this isnt too much to read.
And thank you all in advance :D

Call me Captain Obvious, but you're a Star Wars fan, I take it?

Good job and kudos to you on working so well with your sennies! Anyway, how old are these Senegals? Are they young? Maybe they're "beaking" and not biting?

Michael has some videos on youtube and his blog on how to get your parrot accustomed to your hands and not bite. Start by rubbing/lightly scratching the beak. I can attest from personal experience that this is very effective.

Note that is a method I use but not the preferred method. Its something i do to get familiar with tame birds that are not yet acquainted with me. Not something to use on an untame or aggressive parrot.

Yes I am a Star Wars fan ^^

Regarding my birds
They are around 6 months old and not really agressive per sé.
It feels like they want to chew on everything waking their interest. I will try what you (Michael) did there.

When is a bird "tame"? If it lets me touch it / fly on my hand / or even only tolerates my presence?

I have Seen some of your videos where you let your birds fly on peoples hands they dont know. I suppose they get like that after long training.
Could it be that I want things from my birds to early?

LordAnakin,

Sounds like they're pretty tame, they just don't know their strength. in any case, Viele Gluck!
