4month old sun conure

Postby Tmypittu » Sat Feb 01, 2014 1:36 pm

I bought 4 months old sun conure frm a friend. (Alwys i kyp it wth chain attach wth it) Who raise it when it is very young. And its very frndly to the previous owner. But still im scared to remove the chain for it may fly and never return to me. So what can i do to bond enough with sun conure?

I'm not sure if you realise this but birds can get seriously injured from chains. Keeping one in such a way
Is barbaric in my opinion so the first thing you need to do, urgently, is go out and buy a big cage with suitable bar spacing. The cage must be lead and zinc free, steer clear of painted ones too as these can chip and may poison the bird, at best it will just be a waste of money and need replacing.

As for the bird flying off- make sure you bird proof your room, windows and doors shut, cables covered up, ceiling fans off, objects that might get knocked over removed etc.

As for the taming, it sounds like it is already relatively tame but just needs some time to get used to you.Approach It slowly, talk softly and offer it some food from your hand, dont be upset if it doesnt take the food to start off with.

There is alot more you need to know. I recommend reading the trained parrot blog. There is a link to it at the top and bottom of all the forum pages. Once you are there use the site map to find the articles relating to taming and training. If you need any help just ask and someone will try to help.

My dear, at 4 months of age, your bird is still a baby and you have it chained! I suggest you concentrate on learning the basics of keeping a bird the right way (please do more research about abundance weaning) instead of concerning yourself with training a sun conure to squawk on demand (are you aware that every single sun conure owner would pay good money for their birds NOT to squawk?!)

Please, please please dont keep your parrot chained. It's animal cruelty, you are putting your poor baby in potential harm. It will definetely not lead a happy life that way.

Do everything Marie suggests, its a great start. Read up, educate yourself, but the first thing you should do is to go out and buy the best and biggest cage you can afford and remove the chain.

DO NOT GO OUTSIDE WITH A PARROT, no matter how tame it is. I suspect that is why you have it chained. It doesnt work that way. Either you flight harness train it (super-important even if you have a clipped parrot) or you use a carrier which is the safest option.

Why would you want that?
