HELP NEEDED

Postby Faraaz » Mon Apr 14, 2014 9:16 pm

Hello Everyone,

Ok so I use to have a Senegal parrot and it loved me and always came out of its cage but sadly it died due to a sickness which was not curable. Anyways, I went out and bought my self 2 Budgies :budgie: that I thought would keep me happy. I got my clicker (Parrot Wizard Clicker) and my Senegal Parrots favorite perch (NU Perch from parrot wizard) and tried to get my bird out. But guess what, THEY WOULD NOT COME OUT! They were driving me crazy! I just gave up and look I am here. Anyone have any tips or instructions of how to get a scared parrot out? (My Senegal parrot was hand-fed so I didn't need to train him to get out)

Thanks
Foof

Lots of patience !! Perhaps a bit more patience !! Add to this mix of patience you sitting down and talking and reading and even a little bit of soft singing to them with the occasional treat thrown in as a reward for listening to the singing ( especially if you sing as well as I do ). If they do not take the treat from you leave it where they can reach it. Over a period of time they will begin to trust you enough to take the treat. While you wait for this to occur, acquire a chopstick or other small stick which is as long or even a bit longer. Once you have the stick and they are taking treats from you, you may begin target training. From target training you progress to step up and so on.

This way puts you mostly in control of the process, it also takes a little longer and may be better for you.

The other way is better for them. The difference is that after you spend time talking and singing and offering treats for the day ( preferably in AM ) , you simply open the door to the cage and they will come out on their own when they are ready. They will return to the cage for food and water. When using this method they will come to you also when they are ready. When they do, wait for them to land or climb on you on their own at which time offer them a treat and once they take the treat from you, then and only then do you begin the step up training.

That is about all there is to it. Good Luck and let us know how it goes.

Good luck with that. Also maybe try to spell the name of the person right if you ask for help...

WOW! Do you pretty much optimize the people posting on this board? Must be why I can't obtain any feedback on my questions! Sensitivity training may help?

This person does not epitomize the people here of this forum. I suggest that they were just being grumpy and having a bad day of it.
May I advance the idea that you have gotten so few replies because you asked for Michael to assist you. I previously answered despite that. Perhaps if you would like the input of other members of the forum that you don't ask a question addressed to only one person.
Apparently you don't like my previous answer or feels that it is lacking in some way, if so, could you provide more information as to what it is that you need help with.

Why Thank You ! I am really glad if I could be of assistance to you and your feathered friend.
I apologise for the lack of manners that you previously received, but I assure you that the majority of the people are just not that way and that they care deeply about their birds and about yours as well. Some of us are a bit blunt with our answers and occasionally misread a post but it's all about the birds. Sometimes the answers are a bit more blunt and honest than some humans care for but you will not find a more dedicated group of people shareing their experiences and knowledge of parrots than you find right here.
If we can be of further assistance, please feel free to ask.

I did not reply myself because Wolf gave you the perfect answer: patience. Birds don't have the same timetables we do. What seems a reasonable period of time to us means nothing to them. I've had parrots that would not come out of their cage for months. I just waited them out. They need to feel safe or they will stay inside their cage and that's not something you can rush, it's entirely their decision. And it should be if you want to establish a good, long term relationship with them. You could force them to come out by either scaring them out of the cage or grabbing them with a towel but that's completely counterproductive as it would show the bird you cannot be trusted. Put a good perch on the outside of the cage and place a playstand near it with a very small piece of a millet spray on it, walk away and sit down looking everywhere but at the birds (staring is a predatory characteristic -you can observe them out of the corner of your eye). You can watch TV, play video games, read, etc - you can also talk softly to them but, at the beginning, I would just sit there looking as if I was not paying attention to them. If you do this every day in the afternoon, they will eventually come out and go back to their cage when night is falling (you need to keep the artificial lights off for this to happen).

Once they are used to it, you can eliminate the millet spray and start moving closer and, when close enough, offer them a tiny piece of millet spray from your hand.

But, basically, it all goes down to patience.

Michaels pretty darn busy right now (well most of the time tbh but even more so the past couple of days). He does nip on and off the forums usually and reply to the odd post but unfortunately wouldn't be able to reply to every single one.
The other users here are mostly a very knowledgeable bunch. I would thoroughly recommend reading Michaels entire blog when you have chance as he covers a lot of things. He does make things look so easy though but you have to remember that every birds different and patience and a good approach is key to any successful relationship.
We are always happy to help if we can so ask as many questions as you need to, sometimes answers can be slow to come by though as people aren't constantly logged in and actively reading.

Good luck with your parrot :D
