Postby Gaximaran » Mon Apr 28, 2014 11:34 am

So I've had my parrot for a year now... but it still is scared of me! Okay, he comes on my hand ONLY for food there is no other way I can take him on my hand. Every time I try he just flies away. He comes to my desk sometimes he eats, but... again he flies away every time I try to take him on my hand without food. PLEASE HELP!!!
*And by the way he has plenty of food he has more than enough. I am not starving him.*

There are many factors that affect the manner in which your bird acts towards you. It would help us a lot to have a more complete description of what is happening with your bird and you. If you would be so kind as to tell us about the past years interactions with your bird including whether or not there are other animals and/ or people involved and how they relate and interact with your bird. How much time is spent with this bird? What is his sleep schedule and what types of lighting is he exposed to? What is his diet, by this I mean what does he actually eat as opposed to what he receives? How much time does he have out of his cage and how much time is spent actively working/ playing with him?
There is so much here that plays a role in his behavior that most people just don't realize affects their bird. The more details we have the better we will be able to assist you and your bird in having the relationship that you want to have.
Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Okay, so there were no other animals interacting with my bird even if there were other animals in the house they would be behind the door to my room/the room where my parrot is kept. Other people that interact/ interacted were and are my parents. There also was a person that made sure the parrot was OK during the summer while I was on holiday with my family.
How much time is spent with this bird? What is his sleep schedule and what types of lighting is he exposed to?
I spend almost all day with my bird. From the time I go to school to the time I go home it's the only time I'm away. His sleep schedule is ~ 10PM- ~8AM.
What is his diet, by this I mean what does he actually eat as opposed to what he receives? How much time does he have out of his cage and how much time is spent actively working/ playing with him?
I think you mean if he eats stuff not given by me... no. He basically spends all his time out of his cage I only put him there when we go to the vet to fix his beak. (It is not straight.) I spend about 1-1.5h a day trying to make him stop being scared of me, and taking him on my hand with food.
Thank you so much hope to hear from you soon! bye!
*NOTE: I do not know how to really tame him could you send me a link to a video on youtube explaining how? Thanks.

No, I mean of all the food that you give to him what does he actually eat. Most parrots are picky and do not always eat everything that we give them to eat. They eat some seeds and not others, some fruit and not others, some veggies and not others. That is what I mean.
What do you do with him for the hour to hour and a half that you are trying to make him not be scared of you?
You said that he will step up but only for food. What happens after he steps up?

Okay so My parrot only eats little seeds (because of his beak) from a shop bought mix of seeds e.g. he does not eat sunflower seeds. He goes onto my hand and starts to eat until he gets scared which is practically everything e.g.
when he touches something with his tail. I always just come up to his cage (he mainly sits on top of it) and put my hand WITH food on it. after a while he climbs on and starts eating I just keep on doing that mainly, the other thing is I put my hand or finger next to it without seeds and... he flies away.

OK ! Thanks for answering my questions. One of the things that we need to do is to find a way to get him a better diet, can you get some pictures of him especially a couple showing his beak from a couple of different angles and post them here? Has the vet said what the cause of his beak problem is? What does the vet do to him to fix his beak?
I believe at this point that your present situation is centered around your birds beak problem and the things that are being done to him in the attempt to fix it. Since this is an ongoing situation it is going to take some time and a lot of patience on your part to gain his trust. With this in mind, can you tell me what the routine is when you take him to the vet? Start with getting ready to go and finish with what happens after you get him home, please.
I believe that this will give me the information that I need to help you and your bird, I apologise for having to ask for so much information. I wish there were another way, but if there is I am not aware of it.

I just received and read your PM to me. If you would rather continue this through that venue that would not be a problem for me, but I do think that this is going to be a topic that other people that have birds with a medical problem could benefit from. I will do everything that I can to help you and your bird, either way. Just for my information what type of parrot do you have?

Okay, so first of all THANK YOU! You are replying so quickly :D.

So the beak is the way it is because my parrot was sick, scabies. We went to a vet, who... was a bad incontinent ''vet'' she thought that it was some other sickness and told us to just rub some type of cream on the parrot's beak and it'll be fine well, yeah later on we went to a better vet and it was too late the scabies weakened the beak and thus making it turn the wrong direction (sideways).
There is no way to actually fix the beak but we can slow it down from growing.

Now I am going to explain what happens. So I first catch him using a net ( it sounds worse than it really is) and put a thin blanket with air holes in it, onto the cage. I get into the car and drive to the vet. We arrive wait a few minutes and go in. The vet catches my parrot and uses a syringe without a needle to put some special liquid under his leg. Sometimes she cuts his beak and comes back. She puts my parrot back into the cage we put the blanket back on and we drive back home I put the cage where it should be I open it and let my parrot fly out.

I will give you the pictures tommorow.

I have a parakeet and you're right, lets make it public so that everyone can see it :)
Again, THANK YOU!!!

Sorry for taking so long in responding, I was doing some research. I couldn't find scabies listed as a bird disease, I will keep looking, the closest thing that I was able to find was scaly face mites. I know that scabies is caused by mites so I wonder if this is the same thing.
How often do you have to take him to the vet for this?

I have to take him to the vet once a month.
Sorry for taking so long I was sleeping. I live in Poland and have to get up early.
Scabies is not the sickness its the virus. I AM SO SORRY IF I WASTED YOUR TIME.
