Target Training! (A nightmare)

Postby Faraaz » Wed Apr 30, 2014 5:07 pm

So it been about 2 weeks I got my budgie named Truman. Now some of you might know I use to have a Senegal and he was already target trained but he sadly died. Anyways I am trying to teach Truman how to target train and he won't touch the stick! He knows all the basics like step-up and I teached him how to wave but this stupid target training won't cooperate.

I hold the stick is front of him.

Still holding the stick in front of him

So my question is HOW TO GET MY BIRD TARGET TRAINED! I know birds are suppose to naturally touch the stick, but this budgie wont budge.

Not all birds will touch the stick right away. You could try touching the birds beak with the stick and then giving it the treat, just a time or two to give it the idea of what you want it to do.
Let me know if this helps at all.

Thank you.

This is not a nightmare. Believe me. This is just a very very small lesson in patience.

It worked! Now Truman will fly to me to hit the target.

Great ! It sounds as if both you and Truman have done a bang up job.
