Bird won't get off my shoulder!

Postby chiddler » Sun Feb 14, 2010 5:58 pm

So we have a pet parrot and it is addicted to sitting on my shoulder.

It never comes off, and when it is forced off it simply flies back. Although I CAN lock it in it's cage, is there a more realistic way to solve this problem?

Even at the moment, I am forced to lock it in it's cage because it's behavior is too clingy.

I don't know the name of the spcies but it looks something like this :amazon: with red above it's beak and a little bit of yellow.

Shake it off your shoulder and NEVER let it on your shoulder unless you put it there.

Have you tried distracting your bird? When you don't want or can't have him with you? Don't just take him off and walk away. Try giving a toy or posibly a treat. Something to encurage him to stay on his cage/playstand. Make having to go back to his cage enjoyable. Eventually you will be able to take him off your shoulder and put him back without the toy or treat. He will get it that it's time to entertain himself. While I enjoy having Alex with me that is not always posible or wanted. I have always encuraged him to entertain himself. He has lots of toys. If he is being really clingy he gets a favirot nut when I have to put him back on his cage.

Thank you for your replies.

I did the first suggestion; i stood in front of it and everytime it flew to my shoulder I simply dropped it back on it's cage. After some 30 times, it got the message.

Thing with the bird is that it only has one toy which it is bored of for sure. I went to Petco to find it something else to bite on but they are so damn expensive.

I think I will search/make another thread on how to make toys :)
