Bizarre furniture phobia

Postby AnarchoBoxer » Mon May 05, 2014 4:30 pm

Hello all, I hope you're well. I got Tuco, my 2 year old GCC, on December 11, 2013. He had a reputation as a biter, but he was obviously sweet underneath it all and I got attached to him, so I took him home. I have worked hard to gain his trust and have almost completely corrected his biting. Now he will let just about anyone pick him up if they take their time. He and I have a very special and unique bond, and he's made me an official bird person.

Recently I acquired one of those big padded leather executive office chairs from one of my former employers. I finally moved it into my room last night, and noticed him behaving oddly. Eventually I figured out he was fixated a bit on the chair, and tries to hide behind me when we go near it. He's also a little less inclined to leave his cage to come see me or play with his outside toys and perches since yesterday afternoon.

He has seen a vet and been tested for infection, parasites, and is a DNA certified male.

Does anyone have suggestions on how to help him overcome this? I don't want to force the issue and betray his trust, but I don't want him being fearful in his own home, either. If I have to, I'll just swap the chairs out and find some other use for it later.

Thanks so much in advance, I always appreciate help.

Hi ;
I wouldn't worry too much about it, however, I would not force the issue by trying to make him go over to the chair. This is perfectly normal parrot behavior when confronted suddenly by something new in their space. Just leave it and let him approach it in his own time and everything will be fine.
It is the same as a brand new toy and it will pass.

By the way do you have any pics of the swearing in as an official bird person? Was the ceremony held in parrot or human? I forgot to get any pics of mine.

Thanks Wolf! :thumbsup:

I think the ceremony happened informally the first time he cuddled up on my shoulder and preened me the night I brought him home. lol

Update: He seems to be warming up to it. He no longer flaps his wings when we walk near it, and tonight he let me cuddle him and rub his pinfeathers while sitting in the chair. He still doesn't want to physically touch it or get any closer to it than he has to for interaction with me, but he's doing a great job at overcoming. I'm sure in another week he'll be just fine.

Thanks for the help!
