Conure too hyper?

Postby carrotandlogan » Sun Sep 07, 2014 3:12 pm

I have a 10 month-old conure who cannot stay still. It makes training him extremely frustrating as he is always going after the treat hidden in my hand or just hop/jump around. He will train for 2-3 minutes before going off somewhere.
I've only had success with very simple tricks like wave, spin, and step up. I have been trying to teach him to roll over, but he is always walking around on the bed, even when there's nothing there.
I watch other youtuber's training sessions and their birds are always calm and attentive and they stay in the one spot.
How can I get my bird to be calmer and more willing to learn? It's difficult to get him to do something when he's scurrying around.

Conures tend to be very active birds to begin with, as well as affectionate. Because of this, I have a few questions. How old is your bird ? How long have you had it? How much time have you devoted to bonding with this bird? How much free out of cage time does your bird have a day?

My birth is 10 months old - I got him when he was about 6 months old. I let him out of the cage nearly everyday (but my dad plays with him when I'm not around). He is comfortable with letting me touching him all over his body, but gets nippy/wriggly when I try to pick him up by holding his body. He is fine with stepping up and flying to me. I actively play with him about an hour a day (that includes teaching tricks, doing tricks, playing with toys, wrestling, climbing, etc...) and a few hours just napping, eating, letting him groom on my shoulder, walking around the house, etc...

I can't say for sure but he could still need more time out of cage to fly about as it is the only real form of exercise that does any good with a bird. They generally require about 4 hours of free out of cage time per day. Or you may just have to give him a little more time before he is ready to play with you.

How old would be a good time to start training?

I really don't think that there should be any problem with training now. He won't reach puberty until close to 2 yrs. old, but he should be old enough to start training now.

Hi I have two conures a GCC and a jenday. I have a few Questions. 1.) what time do you start training? I let my guys out of their cages and give them about 1/2 hr. before I start. They are very happy to be let out and want to run around and say hi to me. And get some loving in. Then I start training. 2) what type of treat do you use. Is it one he only gets for training? It needs to be a really good treat. also do you train after he has eaten? I never train when they first wake up in the morning. 3) How are you trying to get him to roll over, You need to take it a step at a time, not just try and get him to roll over all at once. you might want to go a little slower and work on getting him to just lay on his back. you have to realize that rolling over he is exposing his feet and his under side. He just might not be ready to do all that at once. Have him perch on one hand take your other hand and have him lay back on it for just a second and see what he does. a step at a time. I am not trying to be a butt about it I am just trying to explain what I did to get mine to do it. Get him use to laying on his back, What are you trying to have him roll over on carpet or a table?
It takes a great man to give advice tactfully
But a greater to accept it graciously

I also made a mistake in that your bird will probably start puberty at near 1 yr. old instead of 2 yr. old.

I think the most important question here is: what species of conure?
