Wild cockatiel

Postby AnimalAffinity » Tue Sep 30, 2014 10:53 am

My friend told someone to call me when they asked her to take some unwanted parrots. I decided to take them, when I got there the parrots were dirty and food and water was dumped in the bottom of the cage instead of bowls, the cages were rusty and broken. The cockatiel has a bad foot and limps and she told me that in the four years shed had them they had never been out of their cages. So the budgie is mean but I'm really more worried for the tiel, how do I tame this poor parrot.

Also what do I do about the foot, it is noticeably deformed but doesn't seem to cause him pain.

If the foot is not swollen or red and the problem is deformation, there is nothing you can do about it but, in any case, they all need to go to an avian vet and be quarantined for a month. As to the 'wild' tiel and mean budgies, just let them be. Birds don't need to be people friendly to be happy and healthy and the smaller species do better on their own than been human pets -less stress.

I would say that you are in for a long road and you begin it by simply taking the time to hang out with them and talking to them, just so that you can get close enough to them to offer them treats. Let us know when you have been able to approach their cage without them getting nervous, as this is the first step. A gain all you have to do is hang out with them and talk to them to get there.
