New temporary addition =D

Postby issy » Wed Mar 10, 2010 10:25 pm

It's been 2 weeks since I rescued a budgie (no leg tag) in my moms backyard from a stray. It's a girl and 6+ months old i'm guessing because she has white rings around her eyes and a clear cap. I took her to the vet and she is very healthy, no piercings from the cat but her wing was a little sore and might be sprained. Calling her Tui.

I have waited to see if anyone replied to the adds I put up and they have not so I'm going to keep it until it's tame and then find a good home. =D

She is very scared and every time I put my hand in the cage to change food/ water she fly's away and bangs into the cage sides. I have taken her out a couple of times, once to clip her wings and the other times for her to be around us. She will sit there but when anyone sits up or goes near her stand she fly's on the floor.

I have read through some of the topics about taming, but she does not sit still enough for me to approach her with my hand, even holding millet. Any tips on how to get her used to my hand?

Here are some pictures :D

For a moment I was going to say "hey, you're in Australia, maybe that's just a wild one." But then I saw the pics and I know that the blue mutations aren't natural so I guess it must be a lost pet. The training tips I gave should work even for a skittish budgie but yes, the first step is to get it to accept food from you. If the bird isn't hungry enough, it just might not do it. Try hand feeding millet prior to morning meal when the bird is hungrier. If not eating, withhold morning meal for up to 6 hours and keep trying to feed the millet.

Well I have been doing the training sessions with her and I'm surprised to say that I can get her to step up off the ground with a perch and then onto my finger, she loves scratches and does not mind me touching her when she is on my finger =D

Only problem is in the cage, she will not accept treats from me now matter how long I leave my hand in there and she will fly away if i try to make her step up. But i guess this just needs time.

Also wanted to ask a question about her gender. She had a brown flaky Cere when I first got her now it has come off and most of it is blue. So it's a boy now? XD

I believe a cere can change during breeding seasons and non-breeding seasons due to hormonal changes.
