Stop parrot chewing harness?

Postby Paul » Thu Apr 23, 2015 6:42 am

Ok, so I have an 11 month old female Blue-crowned Conure. I have recently trained her to use a harness. She will let me put it on her and enjoys going outside but if I don't constantly distract her, she starts chewing the harness.
Anybody have any suggestions on how to get her to stop chewing on it every chance she gets?

The only thing that I know of is time, she is still not fully accustomed to the harness and so it feels funny to her. If it lays smoothly and is adjusted properly then the more she uses it the lee of a distraction it will become to her and the chewing should decrease over time. Just keep a spare handy to replace the first one when she chews it too much to be safe to use. Keeping her busy while she is wearing it is the best you can do to keep the chewing to a minimum until she quits doing it.

Hey, thanks for the response.
Yeah I guess she just needs more time to get used to it. Her birthday is next month so I will get her another for when she chews this one up too much lol.
How long did it take yours to get used to??

The harness is one of my birds favorite toys. Likes chewing on it a whole lot more than wearing it.

Expensive toy to be sure, but I think they will eventually become bored of them. And don't trust the escape proof labeling. Loxley had chewed through three of them.

If the harness is the right size, properly adjusted and in good condition they are escape proof. Any bird can chew a harness to the point that it can't be used without the possibility of escape. You would not expect a car that has been abused and not properly serviced to be safe for a long trip, like you would expect from a well maintained car. Same thing.
