First Quaker parrot! Help please!

Postby BeanieBasket » Thu Jun 04, 2015 1:12 am

I'm a first time bird owner and I didn't know I would ever have a bird until I found Honey in my garage, I've had her for a year now and she hasn't warmed up to me yet, She'll step up and and 'hug' she talks and gives kisses. But when I try to do anything else with her she gets mad and attacks me. She also acts like she doesn't know who I am if I have my glasses up and my hair is up, the other day she put a hole in my lip when I tried to kiss her. When ever I get up to leave my room she screeches and it annoys me and my mom. I tried ignoring her to get her to stop screaming, but it hasn't worked, when I try to get her to trust me she attacks me. My friend has a sun conure and she told me just to grab honeys wing and open in or hold her on her back. But when I try Honey starts to breath really loud and hard and bites my hands. When I first tried to hold her on her back she almost tore my thumb nail off, I think she thinks i'm going to hurt her but i'm not. I have tried everything i find online and nothing has worked. I cant train her because I don't have the money to get what I need. Someone please help I want her to trust me!

To start with tell your friend with the Sun Conure that what she told you to do is abuse and should never be done to a bird.
You do have to be careful about changing how you look as the bird did not recognize you if you don't usually have your glasses and hair up. What can you do about this? you can try letting the bird watch you do these things and show her as you do them and watch for its reactions. If it gets nervous let the bird watch you undo the changes. And talk to the bird while doing both of these things so that it can be reassured by your voice. If you do this enough the bird will begin to recognize you both ways.
The reason the bird is screaming is that it wants you to stay with it. Parrots are very social and need the support of their flock ( you) to be comfortable and to feel safe.
As for training your bird, it doesn't really take a lot and except for a clicker you can make just about anything that you cant substitute something else for.
So let us begin this with you telling me what you have been doing with the bird to gain its trust for the past year. Then Give me a rundown of a day in the life of your bird, starting with time it gets up, what it gets to eat and when it is fed, what time it goes to bed at night, what does it do all day long. Does it have any toys? The more that I know about your bird the better I can be of assistance to both you and the bird.
