Rio + mirror?

Postby Suzanne_Oeid » Thu Jun 11, 2015 7:10 pm

So i finally organised a room in the house just for rio to be able to do some training, but this room has built in wardrobes with mirror doors and he's going crazy seeing his reflection. Is this going to be a long term reponse from him? Is it normal for him to react this way? I think he's actually enjoying it. I stood in the way and he would change directions to get to the mirror.
I feel really silly for not taking that into consideration -.-

Over the years I have had one cat and one dog identify themselves in a mirror. It was because they were sitting side by side. They knew who the other reflection was so that identified them.

Myrtle identified herself because she saw the two of us in the mirror. If that was Ma then the other is me. This was proven when she landed beside a mirror and said "hello there Myrtle".

As long as he can see his reflection in the mirror then you will get at least this response from him and during breeding season it can get much more intense. I don't like mirrors and birds together and do not recommend them to anyone. If the mirrors can't be removed, and you want to use this space for the bird just hang some curtains to hide the mirrors from him and all will be fine.

You can take over to the mirror and let him examine it. If he actually recognizes himself in it your troubles may be over with him and the mirror. My Grey recognizes herself in the mirror and she just ignores it. He may just see another bird and I don't know what his reaction will be. Kiki, my Senegal, I do not think that she recognizes the bird in the mirror but I am not certain. She doesn't want anything to do with this other bird and turns her back to it. This is her saying I don't want to talk to you.
curtains are really a good choice because you can still use the mirrors if you want to.

Myrtle is on my left shoulder for about of a third of her waking time. When I go to brush my teeth she is with me and admires herself in the mirror. I have found her practicing her words in front of a mirror.
