Tiko my African grey

Postby ParrotsForLife » Sat Jul 11, 2015 1:17 pm

Tiko is starting to trust my mam again she now steps up and my mam brings her into the sitting room and puts her on her perch to spend time with her and watch the Tv.My big sister who does nothing with Tiko only gives her treats sometimes and Tiko lets my sister touch her everywhere. The reason Tiko lost trust in my mam is because before Tiko was falling and she hanged on to my mams lip and my mam got a fright.

I am glad to hear that there is progress happening. But you know it doesn't sound like Tiko is the one who quit trusting and has just been waiting for your mam to regain her trust.

My mam wants to get her a bigger cage so she has more space and because the one she has the bottom of it is peeling off.We found a nice big one she will also have more space for toys. Also have you ever used the palm nut oil for parrots or have u ever fed sugarcane.

I do have a jar of Red Palm Oil and I started using it for Kookooloo, because of her plucking issues, but both of us decided to stop using it very quickly. I have never fed sugar cane to my birds and I think that the risk for diabetes in them would prevent me from feeding it to them as they appear to have no need for it.

Well, I don't know about they getting diabetes from it because amazons and conures eat it in the wild and, as sugar cane contains no simple sugars, it can even be eaten by diabetics (and it's like bananas that actually help regulate sugar blood levels). The thing is that sugar cane is not that sweet. One would think it is as sugar is made from it but sugar is also made out of sugar beets and they are not THAT sweet either. Sugar cane has about 12 - 15% sucrose content but that is based on dry weight -meaning without all the water- and it has A LOT of water (it's VERY juicy and SUPER rich in fiber -the whole inside is like made out of strings) and, when you suck on it, you don't really get that much of a sweet taste out of it. It takes A LOT of 'squeezing' sugar cane and A LOT of boiling the juice to make a bit of table sugar.

I do give mine some as a very special treat (maybe three or four times a year) and the big birds all enjoy it (especially the zons, they love it!) but the little birds don't touch it even though I cut it up in small pieces.

Well, I guess it was shipped frozen to you because, obviously, no sugar cane grows in your country but you don't give it to them frozen but at room temperature.
