Lovebird flies off during training

Postby xify28 » Tue Mar 23, 2010 2:53 am

hi,

hi i have a peachfaced lovebird named lulu. she is very sweet and calm. today i decided to teach
her to roll over. she was doing pretty well but after about 6 times she just flew away from my bed
(i teach her tricks there) and landed on a nearby chair. i retrieved her and tried again . after rolling over again she did the same thing. after that shes been doing it after every roll over(still not a proper rollover. but okay i guess) what shoud i do to prevent this. please answer

What are you using as a consequence? If you are relying on negative reinforcement/punishment, this is definitely not going to work.

Do u reward your bird for doing a good trick? U have to reward desired behaviour.
How i started to teach my sun conure is i worked with him when he came to me, so he decided when we would train. Now i must say he progressed to the level he wants to train when i call him.
If he flies off, let him fly away, and try/continue another time/later when he flies back to you for some attention.
And have patience...
Flock off!!

I'm no expert, but I'd guess there is an attention span issue, too. I try to quit any given thing when Scooter starts to get bored. Although, if it is throwing things on the ground for me to pick up, I tend to get bored before he does! So maybe keep the sessions shorter and quit on a good note.

Most birds have an attention span of about 10 minutes. This is an avarage. So you could do several sessions threw out the day. I can tell when Alex has had enough so sometimes it's shorter than the 10 minutes and other times we can go for almost 20 minutes.

It's worth remembering that Lovebirds really have to be in the mood for training, they have a very short attention span and are very headstrong birds.
Lovies aren't known to be easy to train, and aren't known as real 'tricksters'.
Patience and short training sessions might give you results, though so don't give up :)
