Budgie frozen

Postby RenLynn » Thu Sep 10, 2015 10:34 pm

Hello, I purchased a budgie from pet land and he was the most tame one there. Now however he sits frozen on the bottom of his cage. Barely moving to sometimes eat. It has been a week now of owning him, the good thing is I can feed him spray from my hand but still is his behavior normal?

Thanks

Yes and no ! When you brought the bird home with you , you took and changed the birds entire world, it no longer has anything around it that is familiar to it and this is a terrifying situation for a lone bird that depends on a flock to provide it with safety and security. In this respect it is normal, but this should not have gone on for so long, that is not normal. Have you closely examined the birds food dish to see if what is there are whole seeds or just the husks of the seeds? Budgies, like the larger parrots do not eat the hard outside casing of the seed the crack the seeds open and only eat the softer, more nutritious kernel.
Your bird's cage needs to be placed so that the highest perch, the one that the bird would sleep on is about eye level when you stand next to it. Ideally it should have one side along a wall and be close enough to a window to benefit from indirect light from outside.
Now it is also possible that you have a sick bird, so you should take it to a vet right away for an examination and also discuss this with the vet. If you have the space for it one of the kindest things that you can do for your budgie, if it checks out with the vet is to get it a companion of the same species and of the opposite sex. These little parrots scare very easily and having a companion or a mate will greatly reduce the stress on it.

Wolf is correct, when it comes to Petsmart (or any other store) budgies, usually, what we consider 'tame' is actually a sick bird. Please take him to a vet.

Thanks for the advice but he has been eating and his poop is normal. Maybe he just needs more time to adjust? He made a noise a few days back, he also jumps up on one of the perches.

Please make sure he is in a strict quarantine from your bourke for, at least, 4 weeks.

You are a big stranger and you took him to a strange world. He does not have a Budgie Buddy to comfort him and make him brave. He left them behind in the only world he ever knew.
He is probably afraid you want to eat him. Keep him high enough that he is at your face level. Don't try to touch him and limit your hands in his cage. Right now all he has is his cage.
Spend time in his sight so he can get used to your looks. Sing, read a book out loud or something for him to hear you without you looking at him.
The more you can do within his sight the better.
Can you imagine how hard his little heart was pounding when he sat frozen.
