Where to have the parrot tested for sex?

Postby Sign0562 » Wed Jan 06, 2016 1:34 am

Hi! I got the Picksy a Tres Maria's Amazon Parrot from the store where i buy most of the birds . I did not know at first that the parrot is not sociable and learned it the hard way. Since I have no clue ofthe sex of the parrot i want to ask first where do i have the parrot check for sex but first i probably need to train him/ her how to be a bit siciable which I am having a very good luck. The parrot is aftraid of sticks he/she will run away from it and will start bitting. So when i got bitten the 4th time and bleed i decided i will not use the stick and try to do it my way so i did and fortunate ly i am able o touch his beak now and scratch his head and able to hold him on the beak. The parrot will occationally bite but not hard anymore and i shout at him no and he will stop. The problem with him is when i make im /her step on my fingers thats when the parrot will bit hard and i end up with 4 sets of bleeding fingers from the bites.
Not mentioning i have blood thiiners since i have a condiion of clotting so the doctors gave me a high dose of blood thinner so i bleed a lot. But going back to Picksy now may problem is he doesn't want to step on my finger and if he/she does will bite. So i need help. So i can take the bird to the vet for sex testing. Hope someone is reading this and can give me advice . Thanks

The vet can do it but it's generally cheaper to buy a kit yourself to send off.
I'm not sure what country you are in though so can't suggest anywhere.

Take him to an avian vet, my dear. I don't know where you are in NJ but, if you live as I do in Northern Jersey, you can use mine (Westfield Veterinary Group in Westfield, NJ (908) 232-1048). But stop making the parrot bite you because you don't want him/her to get used to doing it just to make you understand something. Parrots only bite when they feel this is the only way they can get their point across to the human. In this case, he/she is telling you not to ask it to step up, that he/she doesn't trust you enough for that. You need to gain the bird's trust first and that means allowing the bird to make the first step toward a deeper relationship. Do you know how old the bird is and whether it was handfed or not? Because that makes a difference in the approach. But, for now, you should just open the cage and let the bird out (put a perch on the outside of the cage and a non-toxic, clean tree branch going up so he/she can climb -tie it to the side). Spend as much time as possible with it just talking and singing so it can get used to your presence. Don't stare at it, that's what predators do and they don't like it -look at it from the corner of your eye and appear not to be paying any attention to it. Offer a treat every now and then but, if he/she doesn't take it from your fingers, just put it down where it can reach it (you want it to be a gift to him, not a bribe or a reward for anything so he realizes you want to be its friend.

Hi thanks for the info. I got the parrot in the store for a trade in. When i bought a pair of parolets i did not know how much they multiply i bought the parrolrts for 170 a pair but boy do they multiply until i had at least 40 of them. And some love bird. So i ask the bird place if i can trade him the parolets and love birds and was offered the amazon. Very nice parrot, i was told its talking already 4 yrs old . But not talking and at the same time bitting so i think he is not hand fed . Hopefully in the near future i can have a baby from the parrot that i can play with but i am not raid=sing my hands on this one because he / she has a tendency to be nice and from last week and i half i took it there is definitelt a very good improvement on the attitude of the bird. Like what i read with one who answered me there is. A kit to buy in order to test the sex of the bird do we have it here in New Jersey. I am from Bayonne and i do not want to bring the bird without training it first i cannot even move the bird from one cage to another yet. This is why i am asking for a kit to test noe =w if there is nothing what do you think ius the best way to make the bird not bite . I tried so many things in the internet now it tamer than before but there is still an occation bites. Thanks

Can you tell me how long you have had your Amazon? Also helpful would be to know what you are feeding this bird and when you feed it.

While I am waiting for this information which may have a bearing on the actions of this bird towards you, please just talk to him and stop asking him to step up or to do anything. I will try to help you with gaining this birds trust as well as getting him hand tamed again.
