flying on my fans.

Postby Veronica » Wed Jan 06, 2016 9:28 am

So recently my lilac has decided that his favorite thing in the world is to fly to the fan every single time I take him out of his cage. This has been happening more and more frequently for about 1 month and now everytime I take him out of his cage its the first thing he does. What do I do? It's dangerous for him to be up there. When I try to take him down he refuses and gets closer to the middle of the fan fixture motor or whatever it's called. Please help.

I assume the fan is not working so why is it dangerous for him to be there? Birds usually choose the highest perching spot (the higher they are, the safer they feel) so what he is doing is perfectly normal. Is it that you can't get him down? Because if that is the case, all you have to do is ignore him for an hour or two and then offer him a treat while you put something up for him to perch on (get on a chair and raising your arm, offer him his high value item).

The bird should be safe if the fan is not running. Still if you are concerned and are not using the fan, you could just remove the fan blades from the housing. This usually just requires a short phillips screwdriver to do this. You would then place the screws and the split washers in a plastic bag then seal the bag and tape the blades together and tape the bag to the blades for storage. There are two screws holding each blade to the fan motor and if you remove the blades there will be nothing for the bird to perch on.

It's dangerous because he likes to destroy the fan too and he goes to the center of it where the motor is and he can bite cables or whatever is up there, not only that he could get his little foot stuck in one of the crevices and hurt it or possibly cut it off and I usually have it iff but my husband turns it on whenever he feels like it. So I cant really dismantle it lol. My husband will kill me.

Well it is dark here so I can't double check my ceiling fans to be sure but there should not be any wires inside the housing that the bird cold reach, I will check them tomorrow while it is light and get back with you.

I have ceiling fans in the bedrooms but my birds never go there. I guess you are going to have to have a serious talk with your husband about not turning it on -and mind you, I know how stubborn men can get about these things because I had to work for years and years on my husband and, every now and them, he still complains about the things he can't do because of the birds :D

Yeah so I checked my ceiling fans and this house has a few different ones and the one in my room has small crevices where he almost got his foot stuck in he squacked and got a little scared wheb he realized he couldnt get his foot out. It was only when I got up there to help him that we were able to get it out.... But he still flies right back up there lol.

With my cockatiels if the fan is off they use it as a perch. If it is on they feel the wind blowing and don't fly into the wind. I have not needed to use the ceiling fan since I have been here. I don't know if the above pertains to all of them.

I really like my ceiling fans and I believe that they are both more efficient to operate and more efficient at moving air than the higher speed floor, desktop or box fans. Un fortunately they were nor designed with birds in mind so they don't make a protective wire shroud for them, so I can't use them when my birds are out.
