Training with Mango:Continuing Thread

Postby ParrotsForLife » Sat Jan 16, 2016 6:12 pm

Today went very ok he learned to step up on my arm hurray now I don't have to use my sleeve all the time.I done the ladder around 10 times then he flew away.I have to say he done very well.He deserves a nice slice of apple for his good work just hope Cracker doesn't take it lol.His nails are incredibly sharp though I mean they are literally like razors I have bumps all over my arm now and its stinging lol,I cant be the one to cut them can I because we are progressing so well and I don't wanna ruin it by him watching me cut his nails which he wont like so I'm thinking should I bring him out to get them cut? I can only do Loki's nails because she is the only one who is calm enough.Rocko move all over the place and would even bite even though he is the sweetest of them all lol.And Mango I never cut his nails and wouldn't want to risk losing our good work.

Try getting them this perch, it is designed to be comfortable on their feet and to file their nails too.

I have had perches like that and they dont seem to do the job.Mango's perches are all natural wood perches even his toys right now are all natural wood as I cleaned his cage today and decided to do a nature theme.

Perhaps the placement was wrong and they did not use them enough. For me they appear to work best when they are place so as to be the perch that they use when eating, or near a favorite foraging or shredding type toy. I know that Pajarita also uses these, but I don't know her placement.

Ok then, I don't know what else to tell you, except that you might be able to use an emory board or a fine file and just make one or two strokes on any single nail at a given time and work on the bird accepting you to file them on a regular basis. If you just go slow and don't push it they will gradually begin to accept yo doing this with their nails. You might be able to use a nail clipper for this instead of a file or emory.

Good luck.

I do use a file already I can file Mango's nails the problem is I dont want to because I dont want him to go back being afraid of me as cutting his nails will be a negative experience so he is going to get them cut tomorrow in the Pet Shop.

Hey wait.

Wasn't Mango missing a couple nails?

Ironic how the bird that's missing some toenails have the sharper ones.

Yeah he is missing 1 nail on each foot.I suppose all birds can have sharp nails and maybe some species actually need sharp nails in the wild.
