biting and other issues with sun conure

Postby skeetersunconure » Mon May 10, 2010 8:24 pm

okay so i have a baby well he is probably 5 or 6 months sun conure. he knows step up and some tricks like play dead and wave and other simple tricks anyway he is clipped right now and im wondering if that might contrubute to some behavior problems i am dealing with. he was clipped when i got him but i am letting feathers grow out. okay so i really need to clip his nails and file his beak but he bites really hard and so i was wondering how do you socialize this behaviour and also random biting? like a will be holding him or petting him and he will start biting my ear or when im on the computer and he is on my shoulder next thing i know i have a an ear and cartilidge piercing! and its just anoying and painful when he bites randomely so any thoughts? thanks so much!!!

He will probably always try to bite when you're filing and trimming nails. Birds just don't like big tools and hands holding them down. The best method to solve this is get a friend to towel the bird (there are websites showing the proper way to towel a bird) and then do the trimming and some light filing. If you're uncomfortable having to do this, just taking him to a vet.

The biting when he's sitting on your shoulder sounds like bored biting. The easiest cure for that is to give him more attention!

Bites are never random, and can always be prevented by just being aware of your birds feelings. I've only had my bird about a month but already biting of the ears (she did it a few times when i first got her) is non existant, as well as other biting.

For the bird's sake, have a professional do it.

I would suggest that after you have had a professional trim it, let Skeeter get used to a towel. Play games on it... Also it sounds like he is tame enough to handle so hold him a little in the towel, gentle at first just so he gets used to it... I don't think its a thing that the bird will ever be 100% comfortable with but anything to try and ease the stress of it is a bonus :)
