Potty Training

Any good ideas on how to potty train? My bird usually poo's on my arm :( .
Some people say its good to have a special phrase, like "go potty". But people also said that some birds only go when given the command, and during the day, the owners weren't at home to give the command, and the birds can get very very sick from holding it in all day.

I don't think it is necessary. The best thing is to be on top of it yourself and know the timing. You'll notice a pattern that your bird goes every 10 minutes or whatever, and you just put it down for a few until it poops, then pick it up again. Pick it up as soon as it poops. It will start to learn that the quickest way to get back to being with you is getting the potty business over with when on the perch. I think putting it on cue is a little much.

Also they will often hold it in at night and in the cage, so expect them to go big right after you take it out of cage. It is very rare that mine poops on me. She will usually fly off and go to her perch when she wants to poop anyway. :)

Alrighty, and 1 more thing. After the bird goes poo, I don't have to worry about it being dirty, do I?

I'd rather it go on my arm than on the floor. It's much easier to wash off than the carpet.

I've found parrot poop to be so water soluble that it's easy to clean out of anything with just water if not soap and water. I put rugs down everywhere my parrot spends a lot of time to catch the poop and food bits that fall. I just figure that constantly cleaning it out of the carpet will ruin it in the long run so I just replace the rugs when they are too worn out from cleaning.

Yah - I have a large plastic area - like the office chair sheets - that I have in the areas the birds spends most of her time. Then I shampoo the rugs about once a month to get the stuff I missed.
