One sided wing clipping?

Postby Java » Sat May 29, 2010 5:58 pm

Having seen Java try to fly on a few occasions, I noticed one side is clipped, one side does not seem to be. Is this how the clip birds now in pet shops. I find that mean. I would assume clipping half of their winigs, can cause balance issues for them.

I have tossed him into air a few times, catching him in my hands, and he flaps to try to stay up in the air, but he just falls down to my hands.

Don't toss a clipped parrot, it just freaks them out. One sided clips are definitely bordering on animal abuse.

Okay, will do. It was just a few inches up to see if he would try to fly or not. I thought it was mean too and won't be bringing him to be clipped by that pet shop any more.

Yes you should take him asap to have the other wing clipped so they are even. One sided clips are terrible for the bird.

It just seems right to clip both wings if you decide to I don't see the point of having one clipped and the other not. That's like telling someone to try and drive a car with 2 wheels on one side. :?

Also try not to force your bird into the air. A person I watched on youtube would do that as he was teaching his bird free flight and he was told that after awhile the bird develops a phobia of flying itself.

Actually, I gaveJava sort of a shower today and looked at his wings closer (by the way, he does not like showers).

What I see is different feathers on each side apepar to be cut or differnt lengths. Like for instancce, on one side he has that long feather still, and on the other side, it is missing. Also, let's say 3 feathers appear to be cut on one side, but maybe 4 appear cut on other side. I am not concerned (although I do think one-sided cut is horribly mean), any more, based on my closer inspection, and he does not seem be having any issues.

I don't want to go get him cut any more because I am thinking about allowing them to grow out. What will decide that in future weeks/months, as he tries to fly, is how safe it is, and how he can get away from dangerous situations, like a cat's mouth and somewhat his attitude if he is not clipped. I have read they become not as social as they were with clipped wings, but I will be the judge of that as they grow in.

If they do clip 1-sided, I would think that it is because of time issues ormaybe the bird was being really bad.

Thanks everybody for your thoughts about it.

So many new things come up every day with this little bugger.

When I was younger, I was taught that Cockatiels are strong fliers and clipping only one wing is better for them, that having 2 wings clipped on a Cockatiel made it too easy for him to accomodate and learn to fly with them anyway...??
When I moved out of home last year and took 2 Cockatiels with me, they were going to have to live outside so I clipped their wings(our birds have always been fully flighted) so that I wouldn't be worried about them flying away, and so that I could just take them out and walk around with them outside. Although one of them is so convinced she's human that if she'd jump off my shoulder, she'd then follow me until I slowed down enough for her to jump on my foot.
Both them once got out of their cage once, and I was over the road teach a riding lesson, till I look over and see them walking along the farm road heading straight to me. Just a little bit cute but freaked me out. After that they had clips on their doors, was never sure if they undid the door or if I left them open, but the clips made sure I remembered and they couldn't open them.
