Hi my name is Omar, and I amm new in here. I wanted to know what I should do to train my bird some tricks.I bought 2 baby IRN(Indian Ringneck) parrots(10 days old) and now they are like quite old, maybe 1 month old. And now I want to start training them, because people say that if you train your birds from there childish age.They get more friendly and learn better.BUT!!! The problem is that they dont want to learn anything all they want is food.What should I do? And they cant even do step up

hi im Eva i have a sunconure named skeeter! well im not an expert but what II would say for you is target train first. i owuld recomend using a clicker as well. to do this you can use a chopstick and hold it out for the bird as soon as it touches the tip (dont wory curiosity will geth the better of it and it will) click and treat keep doing that and and start moving the stick fartrher away. you dont want to train this too long maybe 10 minute to start. so it everyday or twice a day until he gets it you;ll know this by when you can put the target anywhere and it will come running top touch it then you can target it onto your hand or a perch and vwella!!

yes you are right, well i did started doing the target trick, but i dont use a clicker instead my finger, and then i say come, come, (several times), and then as soon as he touches my finger, i say good, I did this several times. but whenever i try increasing my range of the finger, the bird doesnt responds, is it a little younger age for them to be learning things, or anything else :S

I would suggest you to use a clicker.

The whole purpose of the click is for the bird to know what exact behaviour it did to earn the treat. Also the click sound produced would be the same each time.. Are you sure that you are saying good in the same way?

If thet want food (i.e. they are hungry), then they will soon learn a click means a treat (food(, then they learn a certain behaviour so they should repeat it.. Assuming the treat is irresistable...

I would also suggest getting them to step up before trying any tricks.. More for them to get used to your hand..

mm maybe the step up trick is the first trick they need to learn, but i try putting my fingers near them but they just dont get on there self, they just go somewhere else ignoring me.Not in a scared way, just ignoring like they dont care :S,and i also would like to know what would be the best and tasty treat fruit for them

You'll just need to keep trying different things You will also need to choose something that is eaten quickly.. If it takes a little while for the parrot to eat it then the training will not be as effective.

Have you read the sticky at the top of this subforum? It has extensive information about getting them to step up... Of course you cant expect it all to happen in one day!

k one last question, Do you think that 1 month old is the age to teach them some tricks?, or should wait for them to grow up

As soon as the parrot is born it is in a learning phase... I'm sure it is fine to start training now.

They are just 4 weeks old??? All they need right now is to eat, sleep, and poop. Sounds too young for anything else yet. They need to be a little more self sufficient and eating solid food before starting any formal training. Now they just need feeding, handling, and attention.
