skeeter needs some obedience lessons =o ! help?

Postby skeetersunconure » Tue Jun 22, 2010 5:58 pm

hi guys i need your help! some of you know that i am harness training my sunconure skeeter and he fully accepts putting his head through and does not seem to mind that so i decided it was time to go ahead and try to get it over his wings... well i realized he does not like me messing with the harness on his back and lifting or touching his wings and got attacked he acted very aggressive and it was very frustrating because at that point he was very worked up and so i wanted to get the harness off before he got tangled in it and he was squirming and still biting me... hard and it took about 30 secinds to slip the head collar off but at least he is not scared of it anyway i realize he needs more touch training/socializing so how can i help him? i have several puncture bite marks on my hand now and now am sortof nervous to attempt putting the harness on further without skeeter having some lessons ;) so any suggestions or articles that would be good? thanks!!

You gotta practice touching, handling, and opening the wings before you actually try to get the harness around them. Use the same taming techniques as I outline for taming to the harness but do it with just your hands until he accepts that.

What Michael said plus: With my Cockatiel I would handle him with the harness in the same hand, I would give him scratches while the harness was touching his back and basically falling over him. He started to associate the harness with him getting pampered.

He has no problem with it at all now and if he sees you grab the harness, he will fly over to you.

Hope that helps.

Cheers
Paul

EDIT: Forgot to mention, I even scratch Jazz using the Harness!
