Basically. The fact is that these techniques rely on operant conditioning through positive reinforcement. They don't so much rely on the bird being hand fed and liking people to begin with. In fact most of these efforts are for a bird that doesn't like people so much. That being said it may take a lot more effort with a wild parrot and results are not guaranteed.

hello there!, i've been trying to do as the guide says, but im having some trouble stablishing the training food. For my bird (a fisheri lovebird) the only thing she would eat is alpist, i tried everything (as treats), from different types of nuts, and different types of seed, different types of vegetables, some friend gives rabbit food made of vegetables and some seeds so i tried that and nothing, he doesnt like any of them exept for the alpist...so the only way to train the little thing is to basically leave him without food for about 2-3 hours and then train him with no treats, just her main food...the only thing i've tried to stablish is touch training. after 2 sessions she already knows that if she touches the stick she gets rewarded. then i tried to train her to step on a separate stick to touch the target stick and to get out of the cage and she does it quite well, but when its time to try with my finger she just keeps staring at it with her back feather up (meaning anything could happen, and i mean bite) and the times she bites theres blood, and i dont know what to do next...

about the food, shoud i just let her without food for a couple of hours and start training or what? cuz it seems shes a selective one in terms of her food.

well thanks in advance hope u guys can help me with this

You basically answered your own question. You said if it doesn't eat anything else, you can just get it hungry and feed what it normally eats. Then you said it worked for target training and stepping up on stick. You also said you've only been doing this two sessions. That answers the final question about going onto finger. The bird hasn't had enough experience with target training to overlook the finger and just follow the stick. Just need to slow down and get the bird used to things.

Its been 24 hours now since we first tried this teaching method. I must say the transformation has been nothing short of amazing! Can't wait to see what our new Cockatiel will be like in 72 hours! Hoping to have him out of his cage of his own free will by the weekend.

THANK YOU!

Cheers

That is fantastic. Just be careful not to get too ahead of yourself and overwhelm the bird or make it hate training. Be sure to check out my theory about the plateauing effect of parrot training:

Thanks Michael, it was very interesting.

I was convinced there was no way he would come down to the bottom perch and he did that today. Almost out of the cage. Still wont go on my hand but its only day two. He has no problems eating from our hands at all now . . . Still a little cautious, but still progressing.

I think I must have done about seven sessions with him yesterday. Today I only did 3 training sessions. He seems to enjoy them
