What was your way of teaching your bird to step up ?
With Cuki I used a method with perch .... I started by just getting her to the perch and saying "up" , then I put my finger on the perch but further from Cuki then I started to get my finger closer to her and finally I put my finger on the whole perch and she stepped up !!
With Memo I just used that method of getting some food on your hand and after leaving him to fast for a short time I offered him the food with my hand and he simply got on it . :D :budgie:

For many birds, the slower hands off method is better.

With Duke, he just did it and I didn't have to go through the target/perch method. I can't imagine it was because he was very well socialized. In fact, I believe it was the opposite. I remember, when I saw him I wanted him. He kept running around (clipped, of course) the tank he was in with many other budgies, slipped out of my fingers, and kept getting away. He was scared and he bit in the store, but I wasn't worried about it. Mostly I think that gently pushing his abdomen with a finger and using the verbal cue again and again worked with Duke because I wasn't afraid of him biting me, and he wasn't aggressive. The times that he bit were out of fear. Otherwise, he always seemed to enjoy coming out and being with me.

i had the same reaction from my budgie as kathleen, it just sorta..happened. the day before he was running away from my hand (and at the pet store) he was running away from my hand at home but one day he just decided my hand was awesome and wanted to step up onto it :) now i know when he doesn;t want to come out because he steps to the side away from my hand but never runs away like he is scared. he did go through a biting phase which i got him out of quickly. but i never had to go throught the perch method or any other method really.... and all my other larger birds i have had were hand reared so i never had a problem getting them out of the cage.
