Is there something simple I can try to teach

Postby Munchy » Sat Oct 09, 2010 9:32 pm

Hi,

Is there something simple I can try to teach Disney? Besides his short biting spell he is such an awesome bird. Today he was out and sitting on my shoulder, he would meander to my knees, hands, back of the couch etc... wander where ever he wants. He is so much fun I love feeding him treats when he is out. I talk to him all the time, and I think I actually taught him to screetch when I whistle, or say in a very hi pitched voice "hello Disney". I was just wondering what I can teach him that is simple and fun just so he can get the idea of learning something when we interact.
I read that there is a wonderful bird trainer, a woman, but I cannot afford to buy any dvds at this time and I just want what I teach him to be simple, for my benefit as well as his.

The turn around trick is simple. Have your bird perch on your finger, grab a treat such as millet seed and move it in a clockwise/counter-clockwise motion underneath him so he follows it and spins on your finger. - Check out the parrot blog section at the very bottom of the home page. Micheal has several threads with instructions and video for trick training

target training is a grat behavior to teach. you may think that it is not a trick but it actually is in a way. all you have to do is get a chopstick and hold it out to your bird. he will out of curiousity probably touch the stick click (if you use a clicker) and reward keep doing this and he will learn that if he touches the stick he will get a treat its very simple. it will also be useful in a biting situation ihe wont step up or something it is a very useful trick hope this hellps:)

You'll find lots of useful information on Michaels training blog (he runs this forum). It would be a good place to start if you want to start training Disney.

Teaching Wave would be a good place to start. That's the first trick that I taught Cas and he's pretty darn good at it :D
