Anyone have budgies,, do you let your untame budgie out?

Postby Tinker2 » Fri Oct 29, 2010 1:16 pm

My son got two budgies and then was given an unwanted one as well.So now we have 3..They are not tame at all.My question is about letting them out of the cage.Ive not let them out at all since weve gotten them. Two are not clipped and one is.I let all my other birds out every day from about 9 till around 4 or 5 in the afternoon and then sometimes again later after supper.
Its not too hard getting the tiel or the two greencheeks up although some days they dont cooperate.

Should I try letting the budgies out and how would I get them back in the cage if they are not tame?
Also my other birds usually have one or two favorite spots so they dont really do alot of flying around and getting into trouble. But the budgies are soo small and would be easy to lose or step on Im afraid to do this. :budgie:

I think you will either need to tame and train them, or just get a big flight cage and they stay in it... letting them out untamed and untrained just sounds like a recipe for disaster to me. So I second the motion to check out Michael's article.

My budgies are only semi-tame. They tolerate me. I've always let them out. I'll open the cage door, and if they want out, they'll come out. They fly around for a bit, then they usually find some spot to just chill for a bit. Anyways, when it's time to put them back in the cage, I put my finger under their bellies and they'll step up and let me take them back.

I think it's all about a routine. They know that I let them out, and they know I need to put them back.

Remember not to chase them around. Be calm, and approach them slowly.

Good luck!

yeah i think getting a step up command down with them would be the best thing, so they understand they dont HAVE to spend time with you, but you are the one that will be putting them away. :budgie:
