What to do if you parrot flies away ?

I have come across this on this Australian Eclectus breeders website (Creature Comfort). I think it is a pretty neat idea and I will do it. Thought I would share.

Here is the excerpt from the website.

What do I do If my parrot escapes and fly's away?

The advice we give now has saved many parrots and returned them to their owners in a matter of minutes...

Our babies respond heavily to the sound of the microwave beeping as it always means food, weather it be theirs or ours. We always advise our clients to record the sound of their microwave onto their phone which may sound crazy but its saved many birds. The following story illustrates just how effectively this technique works for our birds.

I have a wonderful friend who happens to be a Doctor and is virtually unflappable, always calm, collected and gentle natured. She rang me up one afternoon in hysterics and could barely tell me between the sobs that her glorious Eclectus Hen which we gave her had escaped from her cage and they didn't know were she was. I told her as the same information I just wrote, to record the microwave beep to go outside and keep playing it. She hung up and we were already packing up the car with climbing equipment to make the 150km trip to go and help her. She rang back not minutes later ecstatic as the first time she played the recorded microwave sound, her pet hen flew down out of thick dense rainforest straight onto her arm and gave her the look as if to say "Well where's my food Mum?"

Another vital tool which should be learned by any pet owner is recall training. This is one of the most fundamental training techniques and if your bird has flown up into a tree, they are usually frightened and very reluctant to come down. This is where recall training comes into its own as your bird must first trust you to do this and where your bird knows the call signal and how to respond to this. In short you give your call cue and your bird comes to your arm as opposed to climbing higher up in the tree or flying off into the distance. Train yourself first by gaining as much knowledge as possible and then train your bird. Prevention is much better that cure when it comes to potentially loosing your parrot.

I will add some Links soon to some of the best and most well renown parrot trainers in the world. The information we can all learn from them is priceless and will inevitably lead to a harmonious and happy relationship between you and your feathered friend.
