taming my lovebird

Postby lovebirdlover » Tue Dec 28, 2010 1:31 pm

I got my lovebird on christmas day so i've had her for 4 days anyways she's not hand tamed so she runs and hides when i do anything around the cage. I read a couple articles on the web and one in here . i was reading and two articles said to sit by the cage until it is cofortable with you being there. i dont know if the sitting thing will work because i have a hidout... it gets a little cold in my room so do i take it out so she has nowhere to hide or do i leave it in? And then when she hides i leave my room but she starts to cherp like she wants me back in there. i don't know what to do ..... :(

can somebody help me please

I hope you keep reading some of the other topics on taming your bird, i don't have a lot of info on your bird ou but,you shouldn't try forcing her by removing her hiding place, your goal is to have her want to do things with you instead of you forcing her. Love birds are pretty hardy but if she's young i'd keep her fairly warm, maybe 70F, cooler for short periods is OK , but young birds don't have the adult feathers and fat reserves to keep warm. Let me know how it goes, and keep reading some of the other topics on training/taming, Richard PS just because the topic isn't titled lovebirds dosn't mean anything, generally speaking parrots are parrots, whether lovebird or macaw, the same basics apply.

Even while she is in the cage you could begin with target training to get her to follow you around the cage. This would also help with the relationship and trust between you two. You could even begin with a special treat whenever you approach the cage, so she begins to associate your presence with, well, presents :) . Once she realizes that spending time with you is a good thing, she will begin to want to do it more, and you can progress to getting her to come to your hand and finger.

I would not change things in the cage for a while, to allow her to become comfortable in her new home.

And as Richard has advised, read any of the taming and training posts that look important to you and your bird, even if they are about other parrots. Patience and perseverence are the keys here. Keep at it and it will happen when your Lovebird is ready. Good luck, keep us posted on your progress!

With my budgies, I spent hours sitting by their cage. Get out a good book, and read it out loud. Talk about your day or how you are feeling. I think that's how my untame budgies got used to me. It's actually very therapeutic to have someone to talk to.

If you can hold a tune... I'd sing softly while you sit near the cage... I've found birds really wanna investigate that sound, or even better.. a very soft whistle.

I still whistle to my birds when they are stressed/upset.. just a very soft.. whistle.. and I chirp... and sing...

I think lovebirds, don't like being alone too much so it would call out for companions whenever it feels that it's the only animate object in a room.

As for removing your bird's hiding spot, Sunflower's quite the same during the early part when we took him in. He used to have this oval swing perch at the back of his cage which eventually became his "security blanket". When he's being a big "pain in the behind" nothing in the world can make him lose grip of that thing.

I took out that perch from her cage because he stopped responding to me. At first, he became more aloof and panicky as he had no more hiding place. But after a few days of getting used to the new arrangement it was no longer a big deal and I'm now able to interact with him more. Just remember to allow your bird to have time to get used to new items or arrangements whenever you make changes in his/her cage.

I clipped Annabelle's wings a couple of weeks ago so I could let her get used to being handled and to teach her to step up. And I made some progress....I cant get her to step up yet because she tries to bite me so i have to find a good stick for her to step up on.But She will let me pet her and she will sit on my hand or shoulder and when shes had enough of sitting on my shoulder or petting she will fly/glid back to her cage and go back in.

im so happy im making progress
