STAY

Postby Chris&Akilah » Fri Feb 04, 2011 12:34 pm

I still have a lot ot trouble keeping Akilah where she is supposed to be. She IS clipped but will still attempt to follow me when I leave the room, which means a quick trip to the floor. One parrot book has instructions for teaching stay, similar to training a dog, and it's going so-so, but she only 'stays' when she is in training mode (that is, knows there will be treats). Trying to use it when I have to pop out of the room for a few minutes unexpectedly, like to answer the phone or door, is useless. It'd just be nice if I could leave her out and not have to stuff her back in the cage whenever I can't watch her for a few minutes. There's plenty of stuff for her to do there, she is just soooo clingy. It's very dangerous, because once she's on the floor she will walk over and stand behind the door. If someone happend to fling the door open, or the dog come barging through it as he sometimes does, and she was behind it...well I don't wanna think about that. Why is she so comfortable walking around on the floor!?! She needs to learn its dangerous.

Einstein has the same problem. What I worry about is my 5 year old brother opening the door.

I've learned that if I leave the room, I put them all in their cage.

My parents don't want the birds leaving my room, and the living that is attached to it.

Once I move out, I'm going to parrot proof the apartment, and give them a little more freedom.
